About Me:
The Tulsa Fire Department has been in exsistance since 1900, while mostly volunteer untill 1905, when it became a career department. We became an IAFF department in 1919, Local 176. It now spans 120+ square miles of what is known as "Green Country" protecting 435,000 citizens within the city limits & countless numbers of others that we help with in mutual aid departments around us. We have 28 engine companies, 14 ladder companies, full Rescue & Hazmat Tech capabilities, 3 AARF units, 6 boats (for high rising water emergencies) & staff numbering about 750 members. Being the "Oil Capitol", we have railroads, oil tank fields & a refinery on the west bank of the Arkansas River. Downtown's architechture shows off the eras love with Art Deco, and also has the roots of both the Tulsa Public Schools & University of Tulsa...The First Presbyrtian Church. Midtown boasts what i affectionatly call the "Old Money" houses & areas because they were built in the 20s-50s with oil money. Midtown also plays home to University of Tulsa, NCAA Div-1, which some have said is the "Ivy League of the South", awesome campus right off of the "Mother Road", Route 66. Southside has the distinction of booming with the "New Money" as it is growing by leaps & bounds, also being home to Tulsa's other university, Oral Roberts. We host one of the most storied rivalries in high school with the Jenks vs. Union football matchup every season. North of Admiral, "Northside" is a mecca for emergency personnel, building some of our "meanest" smoke eaters on the job, while the Eastside is quite possibly the best place to get your feet wet in the medical side of firefighting. Our late A-Platoon chief, Harold McCoy, told me once that there are more hazradous materials that travel up & down the highways through Tulsa than any other city in the nation...wow! That's alot of funky gunky! Tulsa is a special place to me & while it's not Boston or Chicago, I am damn proud to serve its citizens, everytime the drop hits.
