MASSILLON, OH – The coincidences are many and tragic.

A hard-working custodian driving his grandson to school in his van collided with a Massillon firetruck driven by a distant cousin that was responding to car fire.

Ronald Anderson, 72, died at the scene Tuesday morning along with Javarre Tate, 4. They were just a block from the child’s school and the home of relatives.

Anderson’s distant cousin, Susan Toles, was driving the ladder truck that struck Anderson’s van and was one of four firefighters who suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Marva Robinson, 70, said she broke the news to Toles at Affinity Medical Center, Doctors Campus in Perry Township, where Toles, 47, was being treated. Robinson is Ronald Anderson’s sister.

‘‘When I came into the room, no one was saying anything. So I spoke up and I said, ‘Sue, do you know why I’m here?’ She said no. I said it was because it was Ronnie who you hit and she just fell apart,’’ Robinson said. ‘‘It’s sad. It isn’t that she’s hurt physically. She is hurting mentally.’’

Robinson and her brother, Victor Anderson, were waiting inside their Walnut Road home for Ronald Anderson to arrive after dropping off Javarre.

She heard the commotion from inside her home, about a block from where her brother died.

‘‘Victor ran outside and he came back and said Ronnie ain’t coming. I think he’s dead,’’ Robinson said.

Investigators said the fire vehicle sirens and lights were activated. Rick Walters, a Stark County Coroner’s Office investigator, said family members told him Anderson had a hearing impairment.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash at Johnson Street and Walnut Road Southeast at about 8:30 a.m. The intersection is a four-way stop with signs and flashing overhead red lights.

The ladder truck struck the driver’s side door of Anderson’s 1996 Dodge Caravan and pushed the vehicle about 110 yards before stopping nearly a block away at 13th Street.

It is unclear if Javarre was restrained by a seat belt. No child’s car seat or booster seat was found in the wreckage.

EVOC---We teach firefighters & EMT's to drive with Due Regard, but when the lights & siren go on the safety go out the door. I hope the firefighters and EMT's who read this put their head in gear when driving a emergency vehicle, this can happen to anyone, any time. My condolences to the families and firefighters of that company.

Very tragic. My condolences go out to the family and friends. This is a undoable double tragedy that can not be undone. I can not imagine the pain left for those that have to leave on with the Burdon life has given them. My prayers are with you.

I solely agree with (tvfd502) we also need to use this as a learning experience. Prayers are really needed in this case for all.

I have read this article in the paper the other day. I have to say this was a devastating situation for everyone. This is close to us and be re-assured this is by far a 1 blame game. It is also hard for a firefighter to cope with the incident. My sincere condolences goes out to them and the tragedy they have faced. In a issue like this if it ever happened to me I would never live it down knowing I have hurt or killed by accident a family member - close or distant. Reality check for Ohio this can happen anywhere. This is why I inform everyone I know be cautioned about your enviroment surroundings.

Massfd is right, we need to remember the brother firefighters and the family of the deceased in our prayers. Sorry that we jumped to conclusions, but we also need to use this as a learning experience.

You guys are as bad as the public. Everyone ready to blame someone even though you were not there or know any of the facts. There are alot of things that went wrong here and we will find out what and change things for the future, but nothing will change the facts that two people are dead and four FF's lives are changed for ever. So how about instead of you all bashing us and tell us how bad we are and that you would never do something like this and all the facts that you are coming up with, instead would you pray for the family & for us. The pain for the family and us is alot and support would be nice.

Always make a nice strong yield... more then just what we ohioians call a california roll... this is an actual problem we facein this state in general is that people, everyone not just the federal and state workers, don't pay enough attention to what is going on with the roads around us and not just under us. please be more careful I've learned from my Lt.s expierence (he did not cause the incident) and others here in ohio. please be more careful and make it more of a stop then a california roll at a yeild

we as fire fighters and driving the trucks need to take a moment each time we come across a major intersection to slow down and respect the intersection as we would in our own vehicles. to many fellow fire fighters are being injured or killed due to the lack of respect of the road. remember we are asking for the right away instead of taking granet the we have the right to blow thru like there is anyone coming. please ladies and gentlemen take the time slow a little to be sure it is clear and that we have and get the right away to go thru.
