Boy Killed in Fire While Mother Gave Birth

DETROIT, MI – Detroit authorities say a pre-dawn fire has killed a 5-year-old boy in a duplex on the city’s east side, and arson investigators are seeking the cause of the blaze.

The victim’s 17-year-old brother says the fire started about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Andre Williams tells WXYZ-TV that he grabbed his two younger sisters from the smoke-filled house but didn’t realize his brother Kavon was inside until it was to late.

Fire officials say they’re investigating whether the fire was deliberately started. They say it apparently began in a vacant first-floor unit.

The mother of the family was away at the time, giving birth to her ninth child. She admitted that mother’s day will never be the same.
