Fake Firefighter Responds to Call in Official Vehicle

Clarkston, Glasgow – Fire officials said today they had “tightened up” procedures for gaining access to vehicles after a teenager pretending to be a firefighter was handed a set of keys and allowed to drive his way to the frontline of a major blaze.
Christopher Gleeson, 18, wandered into Tollcross Fire Station and claimed that he worked for the fire service in Strathclyde.
When the alarm was raised for a major incident near Easter Road Stadium, he was given the keys to a Red Cross vehicle and drove himself to the scene.
He was later arrested when firefighters became suspicious when he offered to go and get them food during the fire, which destroyed flats under construction at Hawkhill Close of him.
Gleeson, who is said to be “infatuated with the fire service”, was fined GBP 375 for breach of the peace at the city’s sheriff court yesterday.
One firefighter today said there had been little action to improve security since the incident was exposed in the Evening News. He said: “Nothing has come from management and they’ve never said to us that they’ll change procedures.”
The Fire Brigade Union also said it was not aware of any new directives or procedures being passed on to staff, but the fire service insisted it had worked with the Red Cross to improve procedures.
Speaking outside court, Gleeson, from Glasgow, said: “This was just a big misunderstanding. I went into the fire station to see if I could help. I spent a couple of hours at the station then helped lots of people at the fire – what’s wrong with that?”
Fiscal depute Malcolm Stewart described the incident as “a rather odd case” which began with Gleeson turning up at the fire station on April 5 with identification and volunteering his first aid skills.
“He was obviously credible to the extent that he was given the keys for a Red Cross vehicle and as it happened an incident did take place.
“Mr Gleeson got into a car with emergency signage and blue lights and drove to this incident.
“It was obvious to members of the fire service there that he should not have been in attendance.”
A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: “We have tightened up our procedures in conjunction with the Red Cross to prevent an incident like this happening again.”

Yeah, you have to be fully checked off on all of our vehicles before you even look at the keys. Kinda makes you wonder if he got away with that somewhere else.

wow thats crazy.. yup noone drives our trucks unless they are on our dept. thats how it works up here. and if your not 18 dont even think about it. plus you have to know where everything is in the trucks or else your not driving either... and 21 to drive the ambulance. so we have a pretty good system up here.. dont just give your keys out to people you dont know..

What happened to company ID's and hormones and adrenaline got in the way. Why didn't anyone go with him? IF even at that. These things happen and need to be looked at to prevent recurrence.

I really don't know what procedures everyone else have in thier counties and states but i belive that anyone who walks in any station saying is a firefighter has to thru an investigation prior to ride, specially to drive any apparatus.

Well the way I look at it is it is both parties fault because the kid should have know better and the dept for not checking him out. Here on our dept we all know the fire depts surrounding us and if we had someone walk in like that we would call that fire dept.

This happened at a station in Edinburgh (right in the centre of the city),it's about 1/2 an hour from me, Something serious happened here to let a stranger just walk into a station and get a set of keys to an emergency vehicle, I hope security has been tightened.
Most stations have a bell to get in, looks like he was either really convincing or someone has not checked him out.

I'd have to say the dept. is at blame here, the kid sounded like he just wanted to help. Kids will do the darndest of things. He probably didn't expect to get arrested for offering to help.

also want to say the kid came in offered help was granted that. its terrible that you list imposter on your site....doesnt sound like he was an imposter. hes a young man who went over his head endangered others without knowing what precautions could be. however fd knows all to well what those would be. should have followed proper procedures.

was this kid stupid or not thinking. i dont no how it is there but with the station i belong to you are not allowed at any scene until you have passed the cousre and test. he and that fire dept can get in deep shit with this one. they better watch who comes in and out a little better or do something like we have. a buzzer when ever someone walks in to the building. pluse at our station and in my whole state you have to be 21 to even think about driving a truck and to just throw the keys to an 18 year old that was poor judgement on their part.

Maybe this kid was on a ride along which most firestations allow... and the firefighters are trying to cover up the fact that someone allowed him to drive a vehicle that he wasn't authorized to drive. Firefighters could lose jobs if they knowingly turned keys over to someone not qualified for the job.
