Toughest Living Firefighter Competition Ends in Tie
Liverpool Daily Post
September 02, 2008
The world’s toughest firefighter was revealed yesterday at Merseyside’s World Firefighter Games. The ultimate competition within the games – The Toughest Firefighter Alive – could not have been more open as it entered its final day.
In the end, two competitors could not be separated and both were awarded first place – Austrian Herbert Krenn and Daniel Hallgren from Sweden – both with a time of 8 mins 49 secs.
Around 300 firefighters took part in the challenge, which is made up of four stages, the final one a daunting climb up the 550 steps inside St John’s Tower, wearing full breathing apparatus.
Other elements in the competition included a hose roll and a gruelling obstacle course, completed with a 80kg dummy in tow.
Merseyside’s tug of war A team beat Cheshire in the final to take the gold.
For Herbert Krenn, it was a glorious end to his very last TFA.
He said: “It’s been a great course, easier than Germany and Austria with the exception of the stair run at the end, that was really hard work.
“It was a very, very good competition. There were some cracking competitors.”
Herbert will be handing the baton to nephew Thomas, who finished just seven seconds behind his uncle.
Jonas Garder, from Sweden, finished in third position with a time of 8mins 52 and the fastest female was Sandra Wiedenwiedenbein, from Germany, who completed in 13mins 32.
Events continue today, including fencing, karate and paintballing and the games finish tomorrow.
