A Place To Stay...

Posted 5 months ago I am going to be going to the Ohio Fire Academy in Columbus, Ohio in June of this year. It's a 7 week course that costs $1,000, I have to take my own gear which means I either have to borrow it, (even though I'm not associated with any fire stations yet) or have to rent it which would be about another $1,000. I currently live just outside of Cleveland, which is about a 3 hour drive, so no commute everyday for me. Room and board for the Academy is $1,400. My dilemma is that I need somewhere to stay. I really don't want to fork out the $1,400 for that right now. My husband and I are just now getting on our feet.

Posted 5 months ago Sorry I'm long winded! Also, I'm not tied down to Ohio, if there is another Academy in the country that is about the same price and someone lives near it, I would be willing to do the same thing then. I'm willing to do whatever it takes for this to happen. Even if I have to live 1,000 miles away from my husband for 7 weeks. It's worth it and my husband is supporting me.

Posted 5 months ago Have you thought about asking for loaner gear from the Academy. The NH Fire Academy class I was in had 3 or 4 people in Academy gear. I ended up with some close to the end because I wore out 2 pair of department pants. Also, do they have dorms on campus. For people not affiliated it was only $25 a night with dayroom and 2 kitchens. If you could stay I would recommend it.

Posted 5 months ago Ya, to stay in their dorms (which includes food) it's $1,400 for 7 weeks. I could ask them if they loan gear, but when I was reading through the web site it said that we have to bring our own gear.

Posted 5 months ago Did you ever get my email? I woulda let you stay at my house on OSU's campus, except we just got an extra roomate who made a makeshift room out of the basement. Your best bet is to stay at the Academy. It is a lot easier to make it to everything on time if you're already on the campus. It is pretty much like bootcamp, so everything starts real early. Sallie Mae offers career training loans, you should check out slmfinancial.com and see if you can get any help through them. They let you borrow anywhere from $1500 to $40000...so check it out. If you can't figure anything out get at me.

Posted 5 months ago Course you just got another roommate...thats my luck! dude, for 7 weeks I would be willing to sleep on the living room floor and still give you guys the money. lol And no, I never got your email. And thanks for the info about Sallie Mae, I'll definitely have to check it out! that would be wicked if they loan me some.
