Funny thing about being small...

Posted 8 months ago Last night at our bi-monthly meeting, the guys were diassembling the air tanks in the back of the rig to put hard lines on the compression lines. Well, they had to undo a bolt to let loose the tanks and the nut dropped. After a few curse words, one of them asked if someone could go under the truck and see the light through the hole where the bolt goes. no one could see it. I slid under the truck and then sat up and looked over a wiring harness and the fuel tank and see this little hole of light where the bolt should go. I yelled, "I see it!!" then they asked can ya get to it? I said, "yeah! if I lay on the rear axel!!" so up I slither through another wiring harness in a hole about 11" wide to the rear axel. I propped myself on top of the axel case and then yelled, "I'm to it!! Give me a cresent wrench and nut!" So one of the guys hands me what I need and away I went screwing the nut to the bolt. then after that was tightened down, I slithered my way back through the maze of wires and slid out from under the truck. Dirty as hell, I poped up from the floor and the guys just looked at me. I then stated to them, "Sometimes it pays to be small." :D |

| Posted 8 months ago Yoga classes. Confined space entry is one of my favorite OSHA topics to teach. 60% of all CS fatalities are would-be rescuers, so alternative techniques and drills are vital. I used to go caving, AJ, so I know what you mean about mole holes! |

| Posted 3 months ago It's nice being small and in the fire service. The guys are lucky to have us around when they need someone small. We can do things that they can't and it makes them mad. I'm between 4'11'' and 5', and get asked to do some things that others can't do. What would they do without us? |

| Posted 3 months ago i'm 6 ft 1 and 210 lbs but with a bit of bending and bad language i can get into alot of spaces that appear too small. though i will admit sometimes its better to watch a smaller person make it look easy-----awesome story though |

I'm also small and I know where your coming from. I'm only an explorer, but i can do things that the guys can't and then they get mad. I think its funny. |

| Posted 3 months ago Wow, are you ever in for it! Angel, whether or not you knew it, you just volunteered to be the designated confined space person. "Well, that sure is a tiny opening and is it ever close in there!" "Don't worry, Angel is on scene. She'll fit. Oh, Annggeell, gotta second? We have a job for you."

| Posted 3 months ago yeah, that's already the case. It's a good thing I'm not claustrophobic. It's nice though to be in a special position that the guys have a hard time with. Most of the guys on my crew are 6'1 or more and not exactly on the lighter side of things if you know what I mean. (some that is). Oh well :) |

| Posted 3 months ago Sometimes I wish I was smaller.(sometimes) At 6' 4" 235, I am not the one for attic rat or confined space detail. No fear of small spaces though. Just impossibe. |

| Posted 3 months ago It was good to be small last night at fire school. We had engineers night, which is when we go over all the trucks and make sure they are ok and everything is working. I was helping one of the guys go over the Special Service and he needed the time for something, and he couldn't fit into the cabnet enough to see it so he asked me. all i had to do was poke my head into it and could see it clearly, he was happy that he had me helping him and no one of the other guys. |

| Posted 3 months ago Angel , yeah it is nice to have you little ones around. At 6'2' & 150 lbs & a very skinny build sometimes i too can fit into the tight spots. Remember being in a trailer used for scba training w/drager scba's , was in w/anotheer fire fighter & to get through this one spot , i was in a full handstand , full turnout gear & scba on . There was no other way for me to get through that spot , should mention that it was pitch black inside there as well. After pulling off the handstand & working our way through the maze we did manage to make it all the way through w/no problem. Will never forget that experience , i may not be built like rambo & have skinny arms but it's nice to know i can depend on them when the time comes. Good luck in the mole holes lol. |

| Posted 3 months ago Try being 6'8" you have to do all the overhead work too. Someone needs a ladder they just go Eric! or 2TALL! Then I get stuck with my hands over my head pulling down sheetrock or cutting something. Kinda a nightmare. Eric M. Gildersleeve

| Posted 3 months ago I can only imagine being on the other end where you are too tall. I would hate to do all that overhead work. That is more difficult to do sometimes than it is to crawl into tight spaces. Either way, I still love going into the mole holes. :D |

| Posted 3 months ago One of my bestfriends that I used to volunteer with, but that is now a paid firefighter/emt is a great firefighter!!!! she is almost 5' and can compact herself in crazy ways... works great during mvc's... in compititions she always has to be the medic in the car.... she might be small, but she is strong as most of the guys in her department... and they are in total awwwe of her size and strength... earns her alot of props with the male staff, which sometimes is needed when you are the only girl on the shift. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I'm the short one at our fire hall too. At 5 ft nothing I get to crawl into some of the tighter spaces too. Although it has it's drawl backs. We had a drill at the high school and I was asked to climb up on top of the rescue and release the hard tube. Well you should have seen that. There I am in full turnout gear, air-pack and trying to get my leg up high enough to reach the step. My bunkers were getting in the way because it's tough to find turnout gear to fit such a small person. Let's just say I didn't give up and I was up there and had it handed down in record time. Short or tall the job still needs done. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give. |

| Posted 25 days ago Sometimes it nice to have a mighty mouse around. Us trees at 6' or better can't always get into those mole holes, lol. I'm 6'2" & 150 lbs soaking wet & can get into those mole holes pretty easy being so skinny w/a 30" waist but when the ambition is missing , just call mighty mouse, it's alot easier. |
