Posted 5 months ago I guess you could say I'm paid-on-call. Like oohrah's department, we get a check around Christmas that reflects the calls we've been on that year. It's not a ton of money but it sure comes at a nice time.

Posted 5 months ago My department only receives two hundred dollars around Christmas for gas and clothing that has been ruined through the year.

Posted 5 months ago This can be a complicated subject depending on who you ask. It is my understanding that, if you are recieving money for going on calls, then technically you are not a volunteer and therefore forfeit your pension. I am not for sure on this as I serve on two departments with different ideas on the matter. On my Volunteer department I get paid approx. $10 per call because of my certifications as an EMT B-IV and a FF2. We get paid monthly. I am still eligable to get my pension for some reason of which has never been clearly explained. On my paid Department of which is combination paid and Volunteer, the Vols don't get paid anything because the Chief states that if they did get paid that they would lose their pension. Strange huh? Needless to say we've been loosing Volunteers at a farely steady rate. It was just two years ago that they used to get paid. Many departments around here have started hiring reserves. As a reserve you have to put in a minumum of 48 hours a month but you are paid when you are on shift. Many of the reserves that I know work just as much as the full time guys, they just dont make as much money. The best thing about a reserve program is that you get to see how these people are on the job. When your department decides that they want to hire more people or fill a position, they already know who to hire from the reserve pool and don't need to do another costly hiring. Thats all I have to say right now. LOL

Posted 5 months ago we get paid for the calls we run. the Driver and 2nd EMT/attendant get $20 a call. the EMT who does the trip sheet gets $45 for that call. we also get "incentive points" for being on call, going to trainings, going to meetings, etc. these points are turned into $$ at the end of the year, and we can use them to buy gear from catalogs...we dont get it in cash. we are still volunteer tried and true. we dont get paid for the countless hours we spend training our asses off, or the time we put in training the newbies. basically the pay is to keep an ample amount of EMTs around so that at least we can get the rig out the door and to the call.

Posted 5 months ago This is our first year of being paid-on-call but we are still Volunteers. The pay here is intended to ease the burden of fuel costs and also help with recruitment and retention of Volunteers. More of a "Volunteer Incentive" plan than anything else. I personally was more than happy to do it for free but a little gas money makes it nice.

Posted 5 months ago We have no pension plan ,i don't do it for the money ,i enjoy helping out my community and would do it for free if need be, some of us do alot around the hall that we can put in to be pd for but don't because we enjoy doing it a few others need to be pd for eveything. it is kind of nice to get a cheque at Christmas time .

Posted 5 months ago beastlips said: we mostly do it for the same reasons- a little gas $$ and volunteer retention. we were losing EMT's left and right before we started paying. to me, it doesnt matter whether i get paid or not...id do it even if we didnt. it does make it nice for gas, and a little extra incentive when ur getting up at 3am to fly across town...

Posted 5 months ago Man, you all should come up here to Michigan. Our "volunteers" are all paid on call. Every fire department up here, (that I know of) gets paid at least $8/hr per run. Some places make as much as $17-$18/hr per run. Training is usually paid for, as well as mandadory meetings. I was on a volunteer department in Florida, and it was just that. We donated our blood, sweat, and tears for the satisfaction of the job and helping out. Up here you can get paid for it. Not to mention that the vollies can put just about any light/siren combo on thier POV's.

| Posted 5 months ago my department is a combo department...we have a fulltime chief, asst chief ems capt, fire marshall and three duty capts, three ff/medics, three sgt.medics and the rest are paid on call firefighters ranging from mfr,emt and even medics.

Posted 5 months ago I don't get paid for one thing! UVa pays me as a Stress Tech for Nuclear Cardiology 40 plus hours per week. I run one 12 hour shift per week (Fri. nite) and a 24 hour Saturday shift every 6 weeks. Plus whatever I feel like responding to as a backup call any other time. I go to the meetings so I can keep up with things as well as get training. I am on the Regulations committee too. I don't mean to carry on but I love doing EMS. If I could get paid what I make at UVa, I do it in a heartbeat! Even the CHRISTmas stuff! Virginia is just now getting around to keeping up with the rest of the world andsome places are paid so I may be getting that wish sooner than later! :)

Posted 5 months ago We definitely do not get any pay at all. No money or calls, no pension plan, no incentive plan. We do it for the community. This includes both Fire and EMS. We all spend counteess hours in training, classes, etc. which usually gets paid for. It would be nice to get a bonus or something, but currently we do not get any incentive at all.
