Is anyone a single parent and firefigher, and if so, how do you work your schedule around your children? Even if you aren't a single parent and just have some ideas...I'd appreciate that too!

I would suggest working your schedule around your kids, not the other way around. Your kids are more important then your work. They need the extra attention without having both parents around.

I couldn't agree more. One of the main draws for me is that I'll have more time to be with them and to help out with school/extracurricular activities.

I was a single parent with my first child, now 10. Had it not been for a babysitter who is worth more than her weight in gold, I probably wouldn't be married with 3 kids. She is the reason that I was able to do my EMS stuff. She was willing to spend the ight with Sara while I worked nights. After my full time job. I was VERY fortunate to have friends and one aunt who would do just about anything for Sara. My aunt is unfortunately dead and my babysitter is still my babysitter but only during the day now. The main thing is that Sara knew she was ( and is ) loved. It's not so bad now but I remember those very stressed out days. Try to link up with another single parent and maybe switch nights to watch the kids or something similar. Check and see if your dept. has any referals too. Good luck!
