So i was just wondering what the different training requirements were for different areas for jr. members ages 16-18 and for regular members..i would like to see how requirements are different or the same..around my area you are required to have Intro into firefighting, s130 s190 , hazmat awareness and an ems module...

Jr’s training is dept specific. There is nothing (AL) state wide.
FFs’ start with FFI 160 hours with First Responder, CPR w/AED. FFII w/ A&O + Tech.
The State Fire College offers FOI, FOII, FOIII, Arson & Investigation, Pump & Apparatus Ops, and Instructor for all.

In my area Columbia, PA, we have a mack system in place (not sure what mack stands for). It has 3 levels of firefighting. Level 1 you are limited to the outside of the building. Level 2 is able to proceed into the structure to do fire attack and search and recsue. Level 3 can do all structular firefighting activies. Each level requires you to take and pass certain classes to move on to the next level. As for juniors they fall under state laws. They are required to stay on the cold side of the apperatous (boro policy).

Our Volunteer Fire Dept rules state that you can respond to a fire scene, Bunker up if you have had Intro and PPE, but you can not make entry of any kind until you have had a Structure fire class of some sort. We have had Problems in the past with rookies showing up first and getting themselves (and the dept) in a world of crap.. We primarily sue the rooks as go-fers.

we really dont have training requiremens here, as far as fire goes. we train monthly on different things, and when uve been in awhile. you go and take ff essentials, then u can pack and go in. we also take the ICS classes every once in awhile, and everyone is suppossed to take ICS 100 and 700. jrs are allowed to go POV to scene, but theyre suppossed to wait till an engine or older FF gets there to do anything, unless they are EMS trained and there's a reason for them to use that training.

as far as running with the ambo goes, u have to be at least CPR and first aid trained, in the process of getting ur first responder or EMT. once ur an EMT or 1st responder, u can go POV to the scene, and pretty much operate as anyone else...

In this city, new vols have 1yr to complete FFI in order to ride on city owned equipment or operate inside a structure. Department trucks... tankers, brush, or for the "richer" stations their engines are regulated by the individual dept. Jr's over 16 can fully participate upon completion of FF I.
We have 5career stations w/ 6 engines, squad and 2 ladders. 2 vol stations that have large population{read active members &$$$} 1 manned by career 8-5, 5-8 vol. with 3 engs and tanker. 1 with career medic and vols{many out of twn career ff's} man 2 engs and tanker. Our other 2 rural sta's, previously all vol., are each staffed by career 4man eng and als medic and backed up by the vols.
Forcing new volunteers to do so much training so soon seems to be a deterent to many potential vols. I am a strong supporter of training but believe there are other ways to train the new vol ff. They should be trained to do the job asked of them initally, then introduced into the more in depth of ff I & II. in otherwords, put the wet stuff on the red stuff safely, leave the preplanning, and customer serv to those who wish to go further.

On the one hand, you don't have to take anything. But if you EVER want to do more than play gofer, you need training. We have an Explorers program (BSA) - those kids 14-18 train with us, and have a separate training. They are eligible to go to an explorers camp at the state fire academy every summer. If they start at 14, they will have finished FFI by the time they are 18. Our FF must come to in house training and generally complete FFI (a&b) within one year (give or take for scheduling). It is offered at the state academy but most of the vol's can't afford to take two weeks off from what pays the bills to go, so we wait for the evening classes that take place evenings and weekends. We do in house driver training, but try to get a CDL class going every 2-3 years. We expect everyone to get CPR (offered in house every Dec.) and Incident Command/NIMS (we rely heavily on grant money. Even if folks want to drive/pump rather than actually enter burning structures, we like them to take at least level I, and particpate in live burn training so they understand what's on the other end of the line. Personally, I have FF1, FF2, HazMat A/O/DeCon, EMT-I, Large Animal Rescue, K-9 !st Aid, RIT and lots of various extrication and rescue classes. We are lucky - most of our people are FFI or better (or in the process) and most of our officers are FF2 or better (WIP) .
