Posted 3 months ago As a volunteer, its upsets me when I miss a call. We haven't had a call in over a month. So, finally we have a car fire at the local car auction and I miss it! DAMN!!!! How do you feel when you miss call? |

Posted 3 months ago I myself try to make all calls (as well as most of you) but when I miss a call I dont get upset I just go up to the station and help get all the equiptment back on the piece and its back in order. We are vollenteers that doesn't mean we have to be there for every call. I feel the less calls we get a month just means our fire prevention program is realy working to our advantage.

Posted 3 months ago I used to get irritated and 13 years later I don't get so frustrated :) I like sleep!

Posted 3 months ago For me it kind of depends on the call...but for the most part i make the calls..but...when i do miss a call it makes me mad!! because really want to be there and do what i can to help those in our community..but like you say you cant make everyone of them..plus when you have one in the early morning (2am) around here not many people respond..but i drag myself out of bed and go..and its a good thing because i know i mout there helping someone..you know?

Posted 3 months ago It would depend on the nature of the call. If it is the 2:30am hang nail call, then my heart isn't exactly broken over it.

Posted 3 months ago I get sorta disappointed when I miss a call, but most calls I make, and if I don't make a call it's because I'm working or in school.

Posted 3 months ago I'd say that eventually you get over it. But I'd be lying! I still get bummed out when I find out that I missed a large fire call. I usually have an excuse, like I was on shift at my career department or I have my daughter and have no one to watch her. Typical for a single-dad-firefighter! LOL

Posted 3 months ago As a vol. and way out in the country we don't get many calls, and if I miss one I get really dissappointed!! There has been a couple of times I've gone up to spend the weekend with my parents, and go figure after all the time we don't get a call when I leave my friends on the dept. call and rub it in how I missed a call or public function!!!

Posted 3 months ago I try to spend my free time at the station and as soon as I get to my regular job a call drops for us to run. Like last night I was at work and a call came out for a grass fire and I could not make it. It is hard fe me to stay at work when stuff like that drops.

Posted 3 months ago i try and run all the calls im home for unless A. its on the other side of town, or B. they have a full crew before i make it far enough to make it worth while. "A" goes out the window if we are down one emt, or dont have an EMT at all...in that case i usually meet the rig on scene, or as its pulling out enrotue to the hospital. i absoultly hate it when i miss a call around home...

Posted 3 months ago I have not missed to many calls over the years, I hated missing one when I was younger. now that I am a Officer and we have several younger members, I am more concern with the personnel safety and performance at the Incident. It is like being there, if they did well, we trained them well!

| Posted 3 months ago I am aggravated when I miss a call, but when 3am rolls around and it is an EMS call, I roll over and go back to sleep. I am not an EMT so I don't lose sleep over missing those kind of calls. Donald Bramer

| Posted 3 months ago firedwg227 said: I have thought about going for my EMT or Paramedic, but I am in college right now, and I don't have time to take those classes right now. I'm thinking about going to school for some sort of fire administration degree and I might try to get my paramedic certificate as part of my degree. Donald Bramer

Posted 3 months ago I worry about the calls I miss, especially if the other chiefs are also unavailable. I worry that something might go wrong on a call that MIGHT have been prevented had I been there. I've got to learn to trust my captains and firefighters more.

Posted 3 months ago you know I really hate when I miss a call because we have so few that can respond during the day soo I leave work when I can. My boss doent always like it but she knows I dont go unless I need to. Since I am a Captain during the day myself and the other Captain are normally the only officers that show up and maybe 2 or 3 others. SO everyone hates it when we miss calls!!!!!!

Posted 3 months ago firedwg227 said: OH boy do I ever hate to miss a call. For instance we had a minor call for a landing zone the other night, but we had a very tough weekend with a house fire, prom and then going to the fire field this weekend. We were exhausted. Needless to say my other half tells me that I argued with him in my sleep that we needed to go to the call, but I don't even remember the pager going off. Needless to say I was so mad when I found out we missed one....lol On a more serious note, I work an hour or so from where we live and when I find out I missed a call, I get so upset because I know that there are only about 12 core people and during the day only about 4 - 5.

Posted 3 months ago I hate missing calls also.....but I do know when I have to miss one because of work or family obligations that the rest of the guys have it covered and if they dont they will call and ask for assistance!!

Posted 3 months ago I'm listening to our guys respond to a brush fire right now PLUS the neighboring department is running a mutual aid brush fire with San Jacinto County. My guys just advised their fire was under control, but CVFD just had a second tone (no one's responded).

Posted 3 months ago angelalee said: YES you did argue with me! and sometimes tired can be too tired. That is the thing about volunteers that most peple dont understand. We go at a secound notice and sometime we go to the point were we become unsafe for us to respond even though we may want to. We give our all and sometimes we give everything and we dont have enough to give.

Posted 2 months ago I hate to miss a call. If I am off from my Paying job, it bothers me to miss a call. Like most of you we are volunteers in my department and there are only a hand full of us there. On weekdays we have two retired firefighters that respondand if it was not for them we would have nobody during the day. I thank them and every firefighter out there that is will to step up and answer the call anytime it comes in day or night. If you truely enjoy what you are doing it will bother you that you miss a call in my opinion.

Posted 2 months ago I hate to miss....hate it more when I make it to the station and the trucks are full. All dressed up with no where to go.

Posted 2 months ago I hate missing calls as well. I think the worst one ive ever missed was a warehouse 3 alarm fire. We were called in for mutual aid with our ladder truck. I got the tone when I was out grooming the snowmobile trails. Nothing I could do at that point. Luckily for me I love grooming too so it wasnt too bad. I try and make every call. Big or small, no matter what. But like the saying goes... "You cant make them all"
