Hello everyone! I'm currently in the Army and interested in joining the FDNY after I retire and figured I'd do a little bit of digging now so to prepare in advance. Are there any who can give me some information? I've taken a look over the articles on the website here but its always better to get the intel straight from the source if possible. Thanks!

First off, it’s a Civil Service test. It can take years to be called off the list. The ranking on the list is based on your score. Being a Vet, if you choose, you may apply an additional 5 points to your score. 10 points if you were awarded a Purple Heart. You may only do this 1 time your entire career. You may choose not to use the points and save them for a promotional test, i.e. Lt. – Capt. As per the ranking, list number, they call for the physical challenge, CPAT, then an additional list is made. On average, 30% drop out during CPAT. The list is good for 4 years. They call off the list for new hires. Other hurtles that you must make is the D.O.I. background, Philological testing and interview. Then you get to go to “The Rock”, Randall’s Island. It took my nephew 2 tries at the written to get his call. He did score well, but the they didn't hire that many to reach his number. He finished training this past February. In the mean time he got his B.S. degree.
Oh yea, I forgot how many credits you have to have. I think it was 15. Not sure. There is a newspaper for Civil Service in NY. It’s called “The Chief”. http://www.thechief-leader.com/

GOOD LUCK!

P.S. They will accept your military time as credit and will deduct the time served from your age.

Here you go. I found sum more for you.

What to Expect After You Apply

Every three to four years, the Department offers the opportunity for members of the public to apply to become a New York City Firefighter.

Once you apply, you will receive an admission card in the mail before the test date, see the DCAS website for more details.

The Written Exam focuses on a number of topics that gauge a candidate’s ability to learn and perform the duties of a Firefighter, including reading comprehension, problem solving, spatial recognition and applying rules to general concepts. It does not require any pre-existing knowledge about firefighting or the Fire Department.

The FDNY also provides free tutorials to help you prepare for the Written Exam, for information call (718) 999-FDNY.

You will then be called to take the physical portion of the exam. It is a series of challenges designed to test ability in four categories of fitness that are crucial in firefighting.

Based on your performance on these two exams, your name will be put on a civil service list.
You will be called based on your list number and need for Firefighters, which can take approximately two to four years.

Once your number is called, you will take a medical and psychological test, as well as receive a background investigation. Your eligibility requirements will also be checked at this time.

Apply to Take the Test
Apply for the next open-competitive Firefighter examination from now until October 13, 2006 and take the test on January 20, 2007.

Thanks for all the information. Unfortunately for the Yonkers' job I've still got a bit of time before my term ends so I wanted to get prepared in advance to make it as much easy as possible. I'll take a look into everything, thanks again.
