I just wanted to throw a question out there to everyone and see what everyones feelings are towards this.  I was talking to my brother the other day ( My ACTUAL brother!!) who is a member of another department and he just got elected to 2nd Lieutenant.  He was asking me about a drill idea he had for his first drill as Lt and it struck me then.  He was describing this elaborate drill with some strange situation that would probably never happen and going over all of these Glorious State-of-the-art techniques to handle the situation....I smacked him in the back of the head to stop his explanation and grab his attention!  After he stopped complaining of how much it hurt and to stop hitting him I began to ask HIM questions..."Brother of mine, first of all, do all of your guys show complete competency in throwing ladders on a building?  Can everyone in your dept stretch a handline without much thought or error?  Can everyone explain the basics of fire behavior and how certain firefighting tactics can interupt or WORSEN these behaviors?"

After several seconds of staring at me and drooling I explained the reasoning behind my rant to him.  BASICS!!!  Has everyone in the fire service forgotten about basics in their training regimen?  Or is it that you need to dress the drills up in order to get people to attend them?  I see it too often, big elaborate set ups with crazy dangerous tactics being employed...Why?  Are we going to see more airplanes crashing into school buses loaded with children, or are we going to need to understand the basics of laddering a building more?  The basic concepts of stretching the initial attack line or responding to a live, un-detonated bomb that dropped into the middle of the school yard during lunch in a big city public school?

Whats everyones thoughts on this?  What kind of training do all of your volunteer departments set up each month?  I already know that the career departments do extensive training weekly which is why I asked for volunteers to give their thoughts, but if any of you career guys have any advice or input it would be greatly appreciated.  It just bugs me to see training the way it is lately and how lax it could get in some departments.  Lets Chat!!!

We got a new chief two years ago. he has kinda went "back to basics" with the trainings we are a joint department with full and part paid firefighters. we do all the mandated stuff for medical in Jan. and Feb. after that we do fire ground simulations sometimes with live burns, we ladder buildings and also do roof ventalation tactic. we also subscribe to the F.E.T.N. video network and we have got a lot of ideas for trainning from that. I hope this helps you out.

It's all about the basics!  My department recently had a drill on radio ops.  How to talk on the radio.  Identify yourself and who you're calling, be quick and descriptive, and shut up.

Another drill that can actually be beneficial (while it seems obvious) is making sure people stay on their assignments.  I would imagine this is more of a problem in volunteer departments, where there aren't separate ladder, truck, and engine companies.  The hose team shouldn't be dropping the line because they've found a victim.   Don't go upstairs to a fire without a charged line....THE BASICS!
