| Posted 6 months ago This is a no-brainer. Every time we sit in a seat, the belt needs and should be on. Everyone is a safety specialist. If someone is not wearing their seatbelt, tell them. |

| Posted 6 months ago Seat belt pledge? Is it not a state law? It is in most states I am aware of, regardless of what you are driving. Some states may not require back seat passengers to wear them. Which is stupid because most of us know that back seat passengers are going to come hurtling into the front and hit us or go through the windshiled in a wreck. This has been discussed before, and we know the guys in the back may be donning their SCBA's, but they should put the seat belts back on ASAP. Jeff Draper

| Posted 6 months ago We all wear seatbelts all the time NOW. A short time ago this was not the case, but we changed our SOG, and all the guys are really good about adhering to it. We officers make it a point to lead by example on this one. We try to on everything, but are very concious about seatbelt usage. We even made it standard to don SCBA on scene...20-30 seconds is not that critical when compared to FF safety, and it gives time for a brief size-up before charging it. |

| Posted 6 months ago I can tell you this it is hard to train yourself to wear it. I have been riding trucks for 24 years and we never wore them but now our dept is trying to get everyone to wear theirs but it is a slow time. |

| Posted 6 months ago I look at all those windows and equipment we have surrounding us. I sure as heck am going to wear my seat belt. I wear it 100% of the time in my personal truck, a friends vehicle, whatever. Even if I am only moving the truck a little bit, I am just in the habit of wearing it. I wish the Automobile Manufacturers would put a device in the seat belt sensor that won't let you start the vehicle if you have weight in the seat without a seat belt connected. Eric M. Gildersleeve

sign up for e-mail alerts of LODD's and LODI's from firehouse magazine, print these articles out, and have them around the station for guys to see the sheer #'s of injuries and deaths, and this should help instill some incentive into them, and yourself. |

| Posted 3 months ago I know for a fact the All of my guys that are on the same truck as i am we be buckled before we even put the truck into gear to start rolling out of those station doors. Yes it is hard to train yourself to wear them but, After you see what can happen first hand you will alway feel like you need it on. I had a pretty good Buddy Named Brian Hunton that was a volunteer are RCFR with me. But worked for Amarillo Fire Dept. the wear going to a fire in the Ariel ladder the rounded the corner as Brian was putting is Air bottle on and dropped his helmet in the floor of the truck. As he leaned over to pick it up the door swang open and brian fell out on the the pavement and his pack hit him in the back of the head he was taken to a local hospital and was in CCU for three weeks before he died of his injuries. So i hope that every one will take the Seat Belt pledge and wear it on the way to the station and in the trucks on a call. If we don't make it to the scene what good are we to the residents in our community's. Wear home to Thanks and God Bless all of you me fellow brother's and Sister's. |

| Posted 3 months ago In New York State, seat belts are not required to be worn in emergency response vehicles. My Training/ Safety Officer and Fire Chief have gone so far as to put in writing in our SOG that , in accordance with NYS Law, seat belts are not required to be used by Firefighters. The decision is left up to the individual Firefighter's discretion as to whether or not they wear one. I am probably the only person in my department that wears a seat belt. I have argued long and hard with no change in policy. My T/SO is more worried about strained backs from putting on the seatbelt (he says it's not a natural body movement) than injuries from an accident!!! I could easily get on my rant about this subject, but I won't. This type of mentality by those in command is typical in my dept. They have the "It's never happened here" thought process and will not be proactive in subjects like this. RIT/FAST, nah thats big city stuff. We've never had to rescue a trapped Firefighter, so we never will. Firefighter Survival or Fire Training, can't do that, someone might get hurt.

| Posted 3 months ago Here is another subject that has pros and cons to it. I for one use to not wear a seat belt in any vehicle even after getting a ticket for not having one on and I was a passenger. But riding with a person who believe in wearing a seat belt no matter what. I put it on and not even 3 minutes of putting it on we pulled out of the parking lot and was hit head on. I didnt get any thing like the injuries i suffered in my last wreck. I learned fast a seat belt is ur best friend in most cases as well as worst enemy in others. But this last time if it wasnt for my son and I having seat belts on injuries could have been worse. Now my kids put it even if theyre in the back seat. A couple seconds to click it in wont hurt the response time. Again think safety. |

| Posted 3 months ago We (firefighters worldwide) are probablt better at wearing their seatbelts during non-emergency trips, then in emergency trips. Seriouc injury can result in either situation, but more likely in emergency situations. My rule and "our" rule seat belt at ALL TIMES!!!!! We do it in our POV's going here and there, why not in the BRT's. |

| Posted 3 months ago we only have about 3 of 7 trucks that seat belts i try to always wear it but if you sit in the midlle of our brush and utility truck and city pumper we dont have a seat belt. our tanker and reserve pumper has none at all 2 of the trucks have a seat belt for all the suggested riders |

| Posted 3 months ago Seat belts are mandatory to wear in most states, in any vehicle, and should be required in all SOG/SOP's. Also, most trucks have had seat belts for all passengers since like the mid 70's. Are your trucks older than that? Jeff Draper

| Posted 3 months ago it became a written policy that we all had to sign stating that we would wear our seat belts. anybody caught not wearing it will get a written warning then if caught again will be asked to turn in his gear. we ran drills to prove that the scba could be put on while wearing your seat belt. its not easy but it can be done |

| Posted 3 months ago This is something all of us younger guys on the dept are tring to get going stronger there was a recent accident a county over involving a ejection of the chief and opened alot of eyes as far as our senior officers its jsut harder to remember on some calls because of alot of other stuff runiiing through your head but a idea is top hang something in the truck for everyone to see that reminds them were putting in a braclet that is engraved witha memory of a firend who we lsot ina wreck who was not buckled up. |

| Posted 2 months ago eh i'm not going to lie. I don't use one in our trucks. It's difficult to use them because our cab is too small and it's impossible to get one on with a full crew. But if i'm up front or in the burban i wear one. But in nys it's not illegal to in an emergancy vehicle |
