I hate it when I miss special events.  Last night was the yearly Fireman's Banquet at our firehall for the town.  My wife went in my place but it stinks when you are deployed and you cannot make these events.  We are a small town Volunteer Company so little events are hard to miss.  I am hoping to be home before Memorial Day so we can take part in the parade and chicken barbeque.  I certainly would hope so.  Does anyone else feel this way too??

Well, I'm not deployed but I know how you feel about missing special events. We're also a small town department. This past weekend I missed our dumpster days. Where are you deployed by the way?

Well, right now I am at JRTC which stands for Joint Readiness Training Center which is located at Fort Polk, Louisiana.  I am spending three and a half weeks away from my family and department.  I hate having to leave to do this knowing I could be in Iraq at the end of the year.  It is tough, but I make do.  That is why I hate missing special events.  I should be back for our chicken barbeque and parade on Memorial Day.  So what exactly is dumpster days??

Well...dumpster days is an annual community event where we literally bring two dumpsters to our station and let township residents use them free of charge. It's really neat to see the things that people throw away!

Well, that would be a great way to help the community rid them selves of crap.   Not much of anything for a fund raiser for the Fire Dept but at the same time it helps the community out.  It is all about helping the community.  So tell me, does your department play waterball??

Sounds like a fun way to get rid of stuff.

Waterball is played between fire departments.  It is like playing tug of war with a twist.  The two teams set up there engines with a three inch line.  The teams consist of either 4 or 6 man teams.  A four man team will have one on the pump and the other three on the line.  The three on the line will dressed in full turn out gear.  Now, there are two lines just like in tug of war with a large ball in the middle.  On the command go, each team turns the stream on and aims the water at the ball and tries to push it across the line of the other team.  It is pretty wild and extremely wet.  It is a lot of fun!  We do it a lot in the summer in Upstate New York.

One of the things that irks me more is being away from home.  I am currently in Louisiana for training with the Army.  Since being gone, I have missed more events, like our Firefighter Dinner and last night we had our first ever kids dance at the firehall.  The wife was nice enough to send these pictures to me, but it would have been more fun to be there.  So, that is just the case, with me, missing more special events with my company.
