So tonight on 5/12/08,the Cadets and I went to Safeway for a hands on lesson about Fire Sprinklers,Skip Simmons who used to be a Inspector for 20 years saw some fire Hazards while teaching about the sprinkler system, such as the Inspector Test valve was not accesible, there was many different materials within 12 inchs of the sprinkler, which cause's the performance of the water heads to be decreased because the materials obstruct the path for the sprinkler head's water.

I hope this may help those of you who dont know much about sprinkler systems.

Thanks,

Cadet

Can you say "write up?"  Also make sure the valve is on the far end of the system, and the diameter of the test valve piping is equal to the size of the smallest drop/head in the system.

Did they have a High-pile cert?  For material to be stacked that high, it had to be up there in a grocery store.  Also check for testing/PM logs and placarding on the riser.

Doc (Yeah, I know more than I want to about sprinklers)

Here's a couple of evil sprinkler questions for you.  What was the rating on the heads and how could you tell?  How often should the waterflow switch be tested per NFPA?  And what is the time limit for activation of the monitoring system after initial flow of water in the system (this one is a trick question, keep in mind all the time factors)?

When life hands you lemons, cut them up.......and squeeze them in life's eye.

It is also a codes violation, In NYS anyway.  No one can store any flammables within 12" of the ceiling, or obstruct any fire protection/detection/extinguishing equipment.

Just adding my "Codes Officer 2 Cents"!! lol

Yeah but, I hope that you went through proper channels when suggesting certain fixes. If they aren't under inspection you may have shot yourself if you want to visit the store for training again.

We did not turn them in,the manager that was giving us the tour said she will get it fixed because she was young and what not. But the store was not worried at all about getting into trouble.

The ratings on the heads were 135 to 170 farenheit  because it was uncolored and the bulb color was red.monthly.. Wuite awhile.
