Firefighter Questions

Posted about 1 month ago Hi everyone, I posted a question earlier (about ranks) and got a lot of good responses. I'm doing research for a firefighter video game and would love to get more info from real firefighters. We want to make a game that is somewhat realistic in the things firefighters do, but we also want to make a game that everyone can play. Needless to say, we're trying to walk a thin line and while I'd love to make a hard core firefighting simulator, most of the time I think we're going to have to make decisions that favor the 'game' aspect more than realism. With that being said, we still want to be as authentic as possible. I guess I'll start with a few general questions: 1. When you are carrying a victim to saftey, how do you carry/move them? I heard the firefighter's carry isn't as safe as people once thought, but I'm not sure. What if there's 2 adult sized victims, can anyone carry 2 people or do you make 2 runs? |

You grab what you can and try to get out. If there’s 2, you grab what you can and get out. We ALWAYS work in pairs now a days. NO MORE FREELANCING. (that’s working alone for normal folks.) If you were working solo, chances are that #2 wouldn’t be viable when you got back. We ain’t supermen.

| Posted about 1 month ago #2. Standpipes - When you use a standpipe, what/where is the water supply? In video game terms, would you have unlimited 'ammo' or a limited supply? |

| Posted about 1 month ago I would have to say you would have a unlimited water supply. Unless you have tankers that carry water for you, you would have wait for water, where as a hydrant can give you water immediately. "Semper Fi Do or Die" United States Marine Corps |

| Posted about 1 month ago water supply could be determined by the location of the fire. In your more rural settings, you may not have standpipes, and would probably have to shuttle water, in urban settings the buildings( especially commercial, industrial and multi-family residential ), may have standpipes. and could be supplied by municipal hydrant. ( don't forget throw in some dummies parked in front of the hydrants! ) |

What happens is a pumper hooks a hoseline (2 1/2") into a Fire Department Connection (known as an FDC) and pumps water into the standpipes. The pumper of course gets its water from a hydrant (connected with another hose). The water is pumped into the standpipe system which usually has an outlet on each floor (usually in a stairwell or hallway). This way firefighters can hook up hoses from each floor that they need to. The hoses are carried up to the floor in "hotel packs" by firefighters. |

There are several different methods for victim removal and different carries that are used. I do have a suggestion: Get the book Essentials of Firefighting by IFSTA. It is the basic manual used in a lot of academies. It should have a lot of useful information that you could use. |
