I am looking to become fulltime firefighter. I haven't had any training so far but am looking to join either the marine corps reserve for fire crash and rescue or the air national guards fire protection program.  each has its own pros and cons for me personally and i'm having a hard time making my decision.  Both groups recieve the same 15 week fire training at goodfellow air force base.  If anyone could give me any input into wether one of these choices could be better than the other in a hiring process or any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Go Air Guard,,,,,, You will get far more "certs" that way. The Marines send you to the Academy and you won't get much more from what I've heard.

If you join and graduate the Academy you will have IFSAC Certs in Firefighter I,II,,, Airport Firefighter,,, HAZMAT Awareness and Ops. Don't be surprised if you apply with city department and if chosen you might have to go to their Academy. As far as the Army and Marines they don't give their folks the schools like they do the Air Force. If you were Air Force you would be in upgrade training working on skill levels (5,7) you would recieve IFSAC Certs. for Driver/Operator Pumper, ARFF, and Mobile Water Supply,,,Fire Instructor I,II,,, Fire Officer I,II III IV,,, Fire Inspector I,II III,,, HAZMAT IC and HAZMAT Tech and EMT-B .

JustDLONG,

The Marine Corps is awsome way to becoming a Firefighter. I, myself was not a firefighter in the Marine Crops but I knew some guys who are. They said it was really awsome and it's something that alot of people don't think about when they hear the words Marine Corps. I wish I choosen that MOS, but I went with Combat Engineer instead. During my time, I got to see Marine Firefighters put a fire at a barracks. And I do know that they go out with near by civilan fire depts. They do alot of mutal aid work. They do get pretty bust with calls on bases. They also run Ambulances as well, so you will problably get your EMT as well as firefighter certs. Bootcamp is a bitch though, but It's not ment to be. I hear the training is really cool. I try to share some of the trainings I hear about to my fire dept. I think the Air Force is a great way to go. I think their both great. And you can't go wrong with serving your country either.

As a Marine, I gotta say join the corps. But being honest, the USAF (including the ANG) has the best FF program. You will also have many of your required certs.

I have to also agree with this statement. The Corps is great and the best choice I've ever made in my life; But now that I have read more about the USAF, I think it's a better program for becoming a Firefighter.
