Posted about 1 month ago ok im only 14 but i take firefighting to heart more than what some of the guys in the fire dept do, my dad has been in 3 different fire departments in the past 30 yrs. T he highest rank hes made is lietanant. I go with him 2 90% of th calls he goes on but im not elgibale 2 go with them do 2 insurance purposes. I also show up more than half the members, (thats SAD). But i dont see y i cant be a firefighter for everything i do when the get bac off a call. |

| Posted about 1 month ago There's laws and regulations that will not allow persons under the age of 18 become a firefighter, sometimes 16. It just depends where you are from. Insurance won't cover anyone under 18 due to past issues. Personally, I think 14 is to young to become a firefighter. I think 16 is too young. But I'm not saying that there is no place for people your age, it's just you cannot handle the stress of the job at that age. It's too much for people your age. At 18 your considered an adult, and thats why insurance is not going to bother for children. Now you can join an explorers program or wash the trucks or something, but when comes down to actual firefighting that's where I draw the line. I admire your interest in becoming a firefighter. I wish there was more people with your interest. Firefighting is a very stressful job and some of the things you will see are very disturbing. It takes mature people or older groups of people to handle that kind of situation the right way. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from and I'm sure alot of people will agree with me on this. "Semper Fi Do or Die" United States Marine Corps |

I agree with you. Both of my daughters go to the station with me. My oldest is 10 now and she makes runs with us. My youngest is 14 and does all the training with us as a junior member of our department. She is getting a jump start on everyone else by doing the training. When she turns sixteen she can make fire calls with us but she has to stay with the truck and set up supplies. Be patient you will make it. |

| Posted 5 days ago I am glad we have young men who willing to help their commiunty. But I agree 14 is a little young. But just think if you wait till you are 16 or 18 years old, look how much you have learn from your dad and from going to calls with him. I have 2 daughters that love to hear sirens but if they are with me I don't go to calls unless my parents can get them or my wife is home. Hang in there you will get there soon enough!!!!!!! | Posted 4 days ago We are not allowed to bring anyone to a scene unless it is another firefighter from our company. Don't rush getting older. Enjoy your youth while you can because you can never get it back. I think it's great that you are passionate about the fire service but there are rules for a reason and that is to protect all involved. Learn as much as you can now and it will help you to be better prepared in the future when you are old enough to join. It's only 4 years. It may seem like forever to you now but the time will pass by quicker than you think. |

| Posted 4 days ago Yankee I am going to agree with everyone as well. Don't be in such a hurry. 18 will come and go so fast and you'll be saying I am 29 for 10 + years. Trust us we know. Enjoy your youth, learn all you can and play when you can. |

| Posted 4 days ago i'm impressed with your attitude i wish there were more young people like you. BUT dont rush yourself enjoy growing up and your youth while you can. you will become a FF but only when the laws permit until then keep learning, not just about the fire service but about life. i dont think you are ever ready for some of the stuff you will see as a FF but i think you will possibly cope better with some years and growing up behind you.. take it slowly and i'm sure with your keeness you will get there. |
In due time you will be able to fight fire, for now pay attention to school and family and friends, you will need all 3 when you become a firefighter. Work on being young, and getting whatever training experience you can from going to calls with your father. Like mentioned earlier, you will see lots of traumatising things happen to a lot of people, maybe even people you know, and it matures a person quickly to be a firefighter and see so much death and destruction. I was 18 when I saw my first fire fatality (actually I was the one that found him) and I had 4 years experience as a Junior Firefighter and I still wasnt ready to see such a bad thing. It hurt me bad and I still have problems with it today as a 33 year old with 20 years experience. Enjoy being a teenager (but not TOO much!!!!! LOL) and learn as much as you can about firefighting. When you turn 18 you will be a little more prepared. Best of luck to you and stay safe!!!
