I sometimes feelbeing on a smalltown department has its drawbacks also. You are generally dealing with people you know in their worst moments. not to mention  the smalltown gossip. I still think overall smalltown life is a good thing...

You may be dealing with people you know at their worst times but you also get their most heart felt gratitude on a very personal level.  You can tell a stranger 'thank you' for saving your life or saveing your house but you couldn't do it say 2 days later if you saw him or her walking down the street.  You just wouldn't recognize them.

Small town life is like a small family.  There are the good times and then, there are the bad times.  I like to believe I belong to my town but there are still times when you have to deal with people who just do not want to get along.  We are going to do a parade this Monday, if I get home, and I know there are going to be problems out there with it with certain individuals.  You have to get past that point.  Just like you have to get past the point of who you are helping.  They look to you for help because you care.  I really do not think anyone is going to care who comes to help them.  It is just the fact that you came.  In a big city, you would never see the same people again.  In a small town, they will conitnue to thank you until you grow old.  That is what I like about small town life.  It just does not sound like a downfall to me.

I live within five miles of where both my parents lived as children. I have always been a part of my community. If I go anywhere, someone else there knows me. Sometimes I get really tired of not being able to be "just a guy in the crowd". But, it sure is nice to hear "Oh, thank god its you" when I go into a home. Sometimes, people will call my cell phone rather than calling 911. Kind of spooky but its nice to know that poeple trust me and my opinion.

I feel exactly the same way. I have actually had someone call me for chest pains, I was out of town at a school, and thank God , she caught me on a break, I told her " hang up NOW and dial 911"  I've been in this community for 21 years, and know everyone here, between being the plumber and the Capain of the FD, I respond to a lot of their problems, some more serious than others. I'm proud to be the one called on for ALL kinds of help, sometimes I feel like I'm doing more volunteer work than paid jobs, but God always provides. It is embarrassing, however, when I'm out to lunch or somewhere with the chief, and someone comes up and introduces me as the fire chief, it's only happened a couple times, but I made it VERY clear that I don't want HIS job.

No matter the call we go and serve. It is nice to hear your neighbors say things like, "Dan, i knew you'd come." It's true you won't please all the people all the time, but go anyway.  People will comment on our driving to fast, washing the trucks during dry seasons, or eating too often at the local resturant, but the reality is they know we are there. We are seen. We do respond. Keep up the good work we make a difference.

Sometimes small towns do have their downfalls but in the end we are all there for each other. I guess an issue I have with it is all the people out there in "scanner land". We had a double fatalty a week ago and by the time I was done at the scene and back to work people seemed to know more than I did.

Small town life is good.  Most of the time people are willing to step in and help a "neighbor" in need.  However, small town life can be bad because there is no way to get away with anything.  My kids don't like it because they can't get home after doing something wrong without us having already recieved a call (or more) about it.

Also, I can't go anywhere in town and not be asked "How is so and so" after they have seen me respond to their house.

Also, makes strict compliance with HIPAA a pain in the neck.

I would'nt have it any other way!  I love the small town life.  I have unfortunatley had some bad luck with drunk drivers hitting ME., But to look up and see the face of someone you know coming to your rescue makes all the difference.

I love small town life! Yes people like to complain about the little things but at the same time I think it helps when you walk into someone's house and they say Jo I knew you would be here or I'm glad its someone I know. I would not trade my small town for anything.

I responded to a stroke call yesterday and the home owner said " Dan, thank God you're here" It threw me for a moment not thinking that it could be his wife, but it was. It was a comfort to them knowing the responder coming in. It can be a great comfort to those who are hurting.

I've worked for both big city departments and am currently Chief for a very rural fire department. We've had three tragic untimely deaths in our community that have taken their toll. I agree with the previous postings about the communities gratitude of you showing up, even if there was nothing you could do. You don't get that thankfulness in the big departments. On the other hand, I've buried more than my fair share of friends and neighbors including two 16 year old students in seperate incidents in the past couple of years. You activate your critical incident stress programs and engage pastors and community leaders. We're only human too. Even though I know it's difficult to deal with tragic scenes and knowing the victims, I'm glad I have the training to give thier family members assurance that their loved ones were handled with familiar loving hands.

I think that samll towns have their advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are close connections with the community, hugh donation levels, high levels of respect, and high support. The disadvantages are gossip, lack of secrecrcy, and the fact you are expected to do everything but firefighting,
