Posted 4 months ago i am an emt cardiac in rhode island. for all of you that dont know what that is its rhode islands way of having a paramedic without paramedic school we are als and we can do alot of procedures and are given alot of freedom. considering some the cardiacs i would say a little too much. we go through about half the schooling and consequently have half the knowledge. go figure lol but neways i digress. my real point is fire and 911 ems is one in the same here so for me to get onto a 911 system i had to go through all the fire stuff and have been trying for a while now and finally gotton into a fire academy. my first thoughts about this whole idea is this is kinda stupid i dont know anything about fire i am more of a rescue rat but i will do what i have to do. i have been in the probie school for about a week now and it seems everyone knows what they are talking about and i just kinda sit silent and hope they ask a medical question. i realize now i have to study hard and really do doublle time here . there is alot to fighting fires that i had no idea about and its interesting stuff actually but what else should i expect from this class that the book isnt going to teach me .. any tips or gems of knowledge you guys can lend me about some of these practical evolutions that i will be facing soon? i hope you guys can help me out .. thanks clinically fire retarded |

Posted 4 months ago Study those basics as they will help you with the things that the book doesn't teach you. Search this site there is alot of good information to be found. Interesting on the EMT Cardiac thing, you'll have to tell us more about it.

Posted 4 months ago Sounds a lot like the cardiac technician that GA had way back in the day. I was scared stiff when they turned me loose as one. As for the fire stuff, WAY more than just putting the wet stuff on the red stuff. Read, read, read. Read everything you can get in your hands. Keep your cool and work on the cardio side of your fitness. The largest room is the room for self improvement

Posted 4 months ago tsmith1 you are sooooooo right about it is not just putting the " wet stuff on the red stuff" ..... fighting fires is only about 10% of the fire dept we know today. that is why "WE" need to keep learning everyday! Things change as fast as we can learn them. So to all your new firemen just remember you never can learn everything there is in firefighting and use your tools ( brain, instructors, books, and those "OLD GUYS")

Posted 4 months ago The "OLD"guys are the most valuble resource your depatment's have. If you listen and be respectful you will find they have forgotten more than you know... Take the time to learn somthing new every day even if you have to learn it from an "old guy" or for us "old guys" swallow your pride believe it or not the "pup's" can teach a thing or two also... It's not what you don't know. It's what you are unwilling to learn....
