For all volunteers: what is your day job? And are you interested in making firefighting a fulltime career?

I am a management consultant. I don't want to make firefighting my full time career for the simple reason of money. My Dad is a career guy and has been for 38 years, he always discouraged me for the simple fact that you have to work two or three jobs to live comfortable.

I am a wireless technician. If fire would pay as much as that, I would do it. I have more fun doing it secondary right now. Some departments pay well, but the list is long to get in them.

My love of people, and using the skills and abilities God gave me to help people is what drew me to volunteer with my local fire department. The idea of having to work two or three jobs to make ends meet is what drew me to help others in my full time job as a Safety Manager rather than becoming a full time fire officer/EMT. For some, the love of the job is enough, for others, the compensation isn't enough to survive.

I'm an emergency dispatcher. Once I get my fire science degree I plan to do firefighting full time.

I am in Emergency Management. I hope to get a position with a fire department that will let me be the EMC and also fight fires occasionally. I would be perfectly happy being full time but, fact of life there is a lot of funding for equipment but not salaries.

I am a gas station clerk and one of my biggest dreams are to become full time somewhere. I am going to be starting my EMT_B class soon, so i feel my road to full time just getting started. I know it is a long road, i just wish it would hurry up and get over with.

I toy with the idea of being full time, but the money restrictions are tight.... right now I'm a gov't contractor working on the LRAS system, and the pay makes me willing to stay a volunteer.

I co-Own a Physical therapy clinic. If ever we close our clinic and move, I have strongly thought about making it a full time thing. We shall see what the future brings :)

I'm a diesel mechanic at an underground mine. I don't want to go full time because I enjoy fighting fire. I don"t think I would continue to enjoy it as a job

I am a Nuclear Cardiology Stress Technician. It means I get to put people on treadmills or give certain medicines to stress the heart! I am considering going full time, but it is also a money factor.

I am a Journeyman electrician. I'm like most people, if career firefighting would pay the same, I'd do that full time.

All of these comments are mainly based on the "money" issue. When you truly love to save lives, and help others, "money" means nothing. I've been a volunteer while in high school, then went on to full time, the money doesnt matter to me. I make it just fine, sometimes by the hair on my head, but fighting fire is my passion, not making money.

Well, in that sense I can see the money issue. I totally agree with you Jenn. And no, I have no children, but I do have a morgage..

Too old to go full time, as much as I would love to. Only have 2 years left until I retire from good ole Uncle Sam.

I am a Realtor, and I'm just too old to be a full time paid firefighter. But once I get my Fire Science degree I hope to be a Fire Marshal or Fire Inspector, or maybe even an Arson Investigator. Maybe PubEd too. But I will ride the big green truck as long as I can, and the ambulance longer if they'll let me.

I work full time at the local ER in the "communications hub" of the hospital. (fancy way of saying I answer the phone when people call for a doctor or nurse on the graveyard shift, page doctors, etc. all centered in the ER, so I still get the action) That's at night, and during the day I work on the ambulance in town, and on the weekends I take call at another service in a different town. And then when i'm not working both (which is usually a couple days a week during the day) I'm doing the fire dept. thing.

Somedays I claim Cerebrosclerosis....

I get to make a difference in both my "real" job and my hobby. My hobby is being a volunteer firefighter. My "real" job is being a teacher.

I'm a full-time Paramedic and love every minute of it, except the pay. I took quite a pay cut making the move from state employee to working for an ambulance service but I'm much happier going to work now. BUT, my kids are all grown and on their own AND I have a spouse so we have two incomes to pay for the mortgage. I'm not in good enough shape to do firefighting full-time and I'm too old. The competition for career firefighter is crazy.
