Another one of my dumb questions...

I recently took Firefighter Survival and was the only female in the class. I don't like the whole upside down, slide down the ladder thing. So I had a hard time with it. I actually had one of the "guys" from another dept say to me that he couldn't believe there was a woman in the class.

Now, I train hard and make as many calls as I possibly can. And I am always looking to take more classes to become the best firefighter I can be. But it's garbage like that which makes me NOT want to go and train unless it's with my dept only.

This past Sunday, we were called to another district with our boat for what they said was a scuba accident. Well, it wasn't a scuba accident. It was a 15 y/o boy who drowned. They called us to help with the body recovery. Of course I was the only female who got in a boat and helped. The entire time I was in the water, I got dirty looks from other firefighters and they whispered and made snide remarks.

Here is my dumb question. How can I, as a hard-working female firefighter, make a difference in the views of these guys? Yes I'm a woman in a man's world but I have busted my a** to get where I am. And I can get quite an attitude at times especially when it's garbage like this. I don't make a scene or explode at these people, but I take it home and take it out on my husband which isn't fair to him. How do I say what I need to say without coming un-glued ??

Sorry about that experience. Unfortunately, thats going to happen. These things are drummed into them from childhood and will take generations to change.  They might have also been afraid you would see them cry making them seem weak. That is also ingrained as unexceptable. There are others though that realize your motives , hardwork and professionalism and respect you very much as a FF but would never show it.

Which is probably what he's afraid of right? Showing him that you're just as good, because men are taught so vehemently to "not be a woman." Forgive my gender rant but here goes. Everyone is taught through social cues from a very young age that men have certain roles and women have certain roles. Men fight fires, women take care of the nest. It makes everyone uncomfortable when people cross roles, such as women becoming firefighters or men sewing (admit it, you'd think it's strange but most women would actually appreciate it instead of knocking it).

The funny thing is, there's a psychological truth fairly widely accepted that men and women who can exist somewhere within the range of gender performance (i.e. be psychologically capable of changing a tire, cooking breakfast, playing football, and caring for a patient) are naturally happier people.

I honestly feel terrible that men are taught from a very young age that the only emotion they are allowed to express is anger because it's so limiting. So, when this guy you are talking about becomes threatened the only emotion he knows how to respond with is anger and mockery.

In any case...be strong...and don't fight back. His attitude does no one any good in a fire because he's clearly not part of a team, he's a one-man show.  "Heroes" like that will only get burned!

i play music, sing, paint, write poetry, have done some sewing and patching for myself, and used to really enjoy doing embroidery.  i don't feel like a wimp.  i used to fall out of trees drunk at Renaissance Faire, did rock climbing, caving, and snow-skiing like a madman, finding my own spots to do jumps.  i clean up hazardous waste.  i don't like sports, but i do archery, kung-fu, and the only team sport i ever liked was soccer, where you don't have to be a big bruiser and knock people out of the way, but be able to be agile and dodge between other people.  i've done the mile swim twice.  some of these "macho" types would look at about half of what i just posted and think that i was some sort of faggot wussy.  that's because they're using about one-tenth of their brains.  i am a well-rounded person, a Renaissance man, and though i'm not a regular FF, i'm a hazmat emergency guy, where i can be exposed to things where ONE WHIFF can kill ya.

i love having women as students in my classes (they're usually smarter than the guys), and welcome them on my team whenever i'm in the field.  i can't believe that this caveman attitude still persists.  WHAT CENTURY ARE WE LIVING IN, ANYWAY?

I love to cook. Don't like house work dut I do it anyway. I love flowers and writing poetry. I love camping , rafting and  playing with my kids. I hate viloence but would knock a person on his A**S in a minute over certain subjects. I work in construction now but once worked as a nurse. When I see that kind of sexist attitude I want to say " Beam me up Scotty, there's no Intelligent life here."

Listen closely!  Good help is hard to find!! Male or female.  We have a combo dept. We have 3 yes 3 that show up and help. Our roster is over a hundred.  From what I have read, you are dedicated to the cause.  Guys like that come and go, pros stay the course.  I wish we had more just like you.

That bad call you had is just one of many to come. You came back for more, not because you liked seeing dead bodies, but because of the overpowering urge deep in yer gut that compels you to help. To want to make a difference. TO FIGHT!!  Don't let others insecurities deter your desire to serve! I'll say it again.  Don't let others insecurities deter your desire to serve!

There is no need to get in anyones face unless the remarks turn lewd. Me? I could care less what you have hanging, I can't tell who you are in full turnouts anyway. I see it as this. You made it through the training, now you are on a call, you know what needs to be done, so do it. It sounds like your dept appreciates you. They are your brothers, tell them about it and that will cure 90% of the problem. Or it should.

My wife is a lot tougher than I am. Just because. Because she see's the other side of my service.  The anguish, pain, tears, and the anger. You have someone there(Grendel) that knows and understands. Keep yer head up. MKB

Good advice to you all already. For everyone guy out there like that, there are many more who are ok with us females- as long as we truly do hold our own. I am a small woman and I may not be able to lift the heaviest of stuff, heck there are males who can't do it but I hold my own and I get the job done...sometimes the last one standing. So Lady don't let them bottom feeders( not to offend everyone) who are still stuck in the days of females s/b barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen get to you.

When I was on a Special reactions team in the military we could really kick butt not because we we're all the same but because we were all different and with our strengths put together we could reach our goal. We also had our weakness taht helped us look at things in different ways. I can plow through a door like nothing else. The smallest one on our team taught me sometimes you can just turn the knob.

Say nothing to these jerks, nor get into their faces.  Just do the job you were trained to do.  Your company and your classmates know how dedicated and hard working your are.  They too will come to respect you as a firefighter in time.  I'm the only active female firefighter in my company, I embrace the fact that I'm a novelty.  Slowly the guys are coming around to the fact that I can haul hose as good or better than they can!

I had been feeling the same way in my fire house. Currently I have been a volunteer for two years and trying like hell to get into the service full time. I used to look around at the faces of the men I work with, wondering what they were thinking. It didn't occur to me they were watching until we all went through the fire academy together. Thats were I was able to show i could complete the same tasks. Now, I don't worry much about what they are thinking, they are just waiting for me to complete our physical agility in time! They want to see me be hired on. I do get the occasional ladies that become volunteers, more like ladies who's hearts are really not into the job aspect of firefighting and that turns my stomach. We have to watch for that as well. See ladies, we all have to admit that regardless of where we work, we have to bring the same elements to the table that the men do. Most are more than willing to help. Thanks to the work and dedication of the men I work with, I was also invited to test for the "big city department" and so far, has been the only female they have been serious about hiring. Thats a huge accomplishment where i am living.

Answer this question truthfully. Can you pull a 200 plus pound fireman out of a burning building in full turn out gear? I know i can. This is why you probably get the dirty looks from other men, because they know you can't. Being a fire fighter is more than getting in a boat or  putting on a band aid.

i shouldn't grace this comment with a reply but i will------this is exactly the sort of comment her post was about. the sort of sexist drivel made without knowledge of the person involved. i'm 6ft 1 and weigh just over 200lbs and she carries me over 1/4 mile to train and i know damm well. as do all the members of our dept, that if it was needed she would get a fellow firefighter out of a burning building. the comments were made by other men from other fire companies and i would strongly suggest that like them you take your neanderthal attitude back to the stone age where it was acceptable. just because a firefighter is female does not mean that they are worse than their male counterparts, infact in most cases because of dumbasses like you they have to be better

Well said, FireflyEMT, the only thing I would add, and it has already been said also, is, if the comments become lewd or outright derogatory, act on it!!!!  There is no place in todays fire service for this attitude. As long as a person is mentally and physically capable, their participation is worthy of appreciation.

I'm trying hard right now to recruit some local women into our department, we currently only have one, and she's not too active, but will come when needed and available. I was talking to a girl Sunday, and she asked outright if girls were welcome in our department. Our department has had female members in the past, and does NOTHING to discourage them joining, so maybe part of it is doubt on her part, or lingering ghosts of the " old world " attitudes, either way, we ALL have to work together to get past it. If you keep doing what you're doing these other guys will get past it... if not,  IT IS THEIR LOSS,  not yours. The fact that the guys in your station trust you should be enough for any FF anywhere to trust you...who knows better than them? Keep up the fight, and God Bless You.

Also to back up what grendel had to say about this I know for fact there are fire fighters that cant pull a 200 pound man plus full turn-outs and SCBA over anything past a smooth concreate floor. This is the reson for training. Now let me also tell you that I have multiple women on my dept. and I fully trust them and know they have my back.

And to quote another of your posts :

Fire is female because the right man with the right hose can control her. Score one for the guys. ( That was ask a firefighter male vs. female. )

And another quote of yours :

If I do go, I would'nt mind the overtime as long as I am getting paid. Dont care about the free time, just the pay time. I will miss the family, but you can come home every for months for ten days and communicate with the daily.   ( Gee...Seems like all you care about is money and being a jerk to women. That quote was from ask a firefighter; Iraq firefighters. )

Let me tell you something... I busted my ASS to get through the classes I have taken. You are an ignorant, pompus ass !! You have 1 friend on here, no posts but to talk shit to other members, and the posts you DO have are sexist and of a caveman mentality. Since you have the mentality of a caveman, let me put it to you this way...You sure wouldn't be dragging me around by my hair. I'd be dragging YOUR ass by your hair !! You bet your life I could drag a 200 lb person because I have done it ! You might want to re-think comments before you make them and do your homework before talking shit.

I'm not saying I am the toughest firefighter out there but I'll tell you this jackass, DON'T EVER underestimate a woman !!

To the people that matter on here, please excuse my language.

You want me to be honest about this, then I will- Yes and No! Can I drag a 200 lb man across a smooth concrete floor, you bet I can. Can I drag a 200 lb man out of a burning building, I don't know I haven't had to yet and I hope I never do. As I have posted before in my recruit class there were 24 of us, 4 of us girls. I weighed 91 lbs and I am 5'4. When we did the physical agility they set up, I was 1(only girl) of less then half of the class who completed it under the time given. There were guys who should have been able to do it but quit because they couldn't drag the dummy 60ft at the end.

So don't discount all of us girls, we can do and do do alot more then you think. There will always be things that guys and gals can't do, but by working together we can all get the job done. So along with what everyone else said---if you have no respect for women then you don't belong, maybe you should consider a career at the highest point of a mountain and stay there.

I completely agree with Froogsey and LadyFirefighter08. You can't just assume that a person can't successfully complete a task solely based on their gender. In my explorers program, I am the only girl. When we do PT, I watch guys fall out all around me and guys who are unable to complete the task without quitting. Girls can do a lot more than guys give them credit for, and the sexist comments only make the girls more determined to prove themselves. Gender aside, all firefighters are trained in the same way, so there should be no mistrust between firefighters, male or female, because everyone has been taught the same thing. Girls are joining profession of firefighting, and the guys just need to deal with the fact that girls are just as good, if not better, than them at firefighting.

Thank you ladies for your comments on this.

I apologize for getting upset and kind of flying off the handle but I train just as hard if not harder than some. I am not treated any different than anyone else and I don't expect our training officer to take it "easy" on me just because I don't have something "swinging".

I know my limits and I would never put anyone else in harm's way. The things I need to work on are not a weight pulling issue. I have issues with going out a 2nd story window head first. Does that make me any less of a firefighter? I was the ONLY female in my Firefighter Survival class and I was NOT the only person to have problems with this. I did it ! Scared me to death but I did it. So the guys that had problems...Is that ok because they are guys? Does that make them any less of a firefighter? No I don't think so. It just makes us aware of what we need to work on to overcome if we can. If it's something I can't overcome then I wouldn't expect my officers to put me in that situation and I would be WOMAN enough to admit I couldn't do it.

Not to toot my own horn but I am pretty proud of the fact that I have been in the fire service for just over 5 months now and have FF 1, FF Survival and Ice Water Rescue under my belt. I could have taken FAST / RIT team training a few weeks ago but decided I wanted to get a little more experience under my belt before I tackled that. Shame on me right ?! Guess that's a woman's point of view.

As to you, sdq (with one friend and a few sexist and demeaning posts ), YES I CAN pull a 200 lb person in gear. And I never said being a firefighter was just getting in a boat or putting on a band aid. And you are certainly no better than I am just as I am no better than you. But the next time you post, why don't you take a few seconds out of your busy schedule and be sure what you're posting isn't hurtful, would offend someone, or ignorant. You don't know me or what I am capable of ! My firefighter brothers and sisters do. And that's all that matters.

To those I have offended I am sorry. To the moderators, I apologize, but I feel that making an idiotic comment like that was wrong.

Lady: We have fire female fire fighters who are more medically minded than fire minded, but we know there strenghts and weaknesses. I personally love to have females on the team for those touchy (no pun intended) situations. While on a factory emergency responce team our captian was a female and i am forever greatful. She encouraged me beyond my own limits. To this day i would have no reservations about any of her commands, tactics, or orders. She was knowledgable, fair and yes very very stern. Bottom line i had all the respect in the world for her as a leader.

i just dont understand how this attitude can still exist-----i had females in my section during my military service and i never thaught for 1 minute that they were lesser people than the males. i knew they would do the job and had my back as i had theirs.  i wonder how the FF's comments would go down with his colleagues at his firehouse if indeed he is a FF and not just some 1 braincelled idiot who is labouring under the notion that he is clever and funny. oh well i await his next burbling with something resembling contempt. to the rest of you firefighters take care and stay safe

SOUNDS LIKE THE MEN THERE ARE INSECURE. WE HAVE A FEMALE FIREFIGHTER ON OUR DEPT. WHO WILL RUN CIRCLES AROUND 80% OF THE GUYS HERE,INCLUDING MYSELF. WE TREAT HER THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE. NOT BECAUSE SHE IS A GIRL , BUT BECAUSE SHE IS A FIREFIGHTER. WE DON'T PLAY THAT IM BETTER THAN YOU GAME HERE. YOU NEED TO BE THE ADULT AND GO OUT OF YOUR WAY JUST TO SHOW THEM THAT YOU HAVE JUST AS MUCH RIGHT AS THEY DO. DON'T LET THEM SCARE YOU OFF!!

i shouldn't LOL that there are still attitudes like that out there, because what i say to my own students is "WHAT CENTURY ARE WE LIVING IN, ANYWAY?"  in my science-oriented community, i guess we tend to be more evolved.  astronomy, archaeology and geology/earth sciences tended to have the coolest women (and they tended to be rather exquisitely beautiful ones as well) gravitate toward those disciplines anyway, which was great.  some "macho" guys only want dumb chicks that they can brag about in the locker room, because they only want to boff them but would rather spend time with their male friends, but i like to hang out with women, preferably intelligent ones.  hey, that's just me.  wow, do i look happy? ;)

but it reminded me, when i read the bit about who can carry a 200-lb. victim out of a scenario, of a 6'1" girlfriend of mine who used to pick 165-pound me up and carry me around, just for fun.  (we were both naked, in case yer interested.)  when we went camping, her feet stuck out of my pup tent.  that sexist should wish he was the son of a woman whose adrenaline allows her to lift a freakin' CAR off her kid...yes, it's become an urban legend, and cars weigh less than they used to, but HUMANS can do an incredible array of things, male or female.  screw all the upper vs. lower body strength...i've always been better at the lower myself, with all the hiking, bicycling and skiing.  our sdq person just needs to meet and discuss issues with more educated people, and LEARN SOMETHING, or just shut up and get out of the trade.  as i also ask my classes, DOES THAT MAKE SENSE???
