Our fire department is a rather small department. We cover about 125 square miles including the town of New London, MO. We have a new pumper that is a little over a year old and we have a new brush truck on order that should be here in a couple months. As well a BIG 5-ton 6x6 2400 gallon tanker and a good 1200 International tanker. Our problem is that we can't seem to get people involved within the department and also get new volunteers from the public. We haven't tryed very hard but now we down to about 12-15 firefighters and we need more help. Please let me know how you get new "helpers". Thanks

Television. Sometimes the local news crews will doing story on it and how you need volunteers. That should get some help. I remember ky3 did one on buffalo MO a while back.

Sometimes to maintain your authority in the face of criticism, you have to make stuff up.

I hear where you're going with this topic. If I was in your area I would sign up for sure!! Trying to find somewhere to sign up over here but the need over here seems not to be unnecessary.  Just looking to get my foot in the door. Good luck over there!!! Pass along any info if you here anything.

kzov's right; TV. Add newspapers, local radio. Get a full-on PR campaign going, consider setting up a recruiting booth at local events, anything that will get your FD into the public eye. I know from experience that its hard as hell to keep everyone motivated, morale ebbs & flows as does public interest. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a catastrophe to get things up & moving again. That's not a good thing to depend on. Surely, you're not the only fireman on your dept that has these concerns. Start there, have a few skull sessions to gen up some ideas, get someone from your local newspaper in on it, believe it or not, the media CAN be your best friend (provided you mind the leash).

There is a fair / carnival every year in a neighboring district. If I am not mistaken, they set up a booth and take blood pressures and hand out small things like pencils or magnets. But I do agree on using the local papers.
