smoking?

Posted 2 months ago I have observed some rescue squad volunteers smoking during calls- not around the patient but for example i saw a situation in which there were a large number who responded and 3 or so went into the house and the other 2 stayed out side and had a cigarette. I dont think this is right and it makes the department look bad- does anyones dept prohibit smoking on calls? |

| Posted 2 months ago Yes, smoking on scene is prohibited. If it is a long term call, you must go out of sight of the public, like away from the scene or behind an engine or something. Jeff Draper

| Posted 2 months ago I agree with chase1. If it is a long fire scene then I can understand the need for people who do smoke to get a break and go some where exclusive away from everyone and smoke em if you got them. "Hell, these are Marines. Men like them held Guadalcanal and took Iwo Jima. Bagdad ain't shit." "Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem." United States Marine Corps |

| Posted 2 months ago some guys here will still smoke after a call is done on the scene. but now here as of last week there is no smoking in any puplic access, city/government buildings and grounds/parks. so that is taking its toll on some i think. |

| Posted 27 days ago My favorite philosophy is this....If I see you're smoking, I'll assume that you're on fire and react accordingly...

Just think how much money you have saved already. 2 packs a day = $10/day x 7days = $70/week x 12 weeks = $840. And thats if you are only smoking cheap $5/pack cigs.
Oh yeah I don't smoke and I think that it is one of the greatest waste of time and money there is. No offence. Donald Bramer

| Posted 27 days ago Agreed. It is also one of the hardest addictions to break. Gotta love the government. It's one thing to make the choice to do it, but they allow so much crap to be used in it that it makes it addicting, it ought to be criminal. Jeff Draper

| Posted 6 days ago I know some of the guys, if we have the road closed down waiting setting up a LZ for Air medical and it's going to be a while, they will smoke one. "Hell, these are Marines. Well getting the kids to soak a carton of cigs in the toilet & then let 'em dry out is a pretty helpful technique that my brother and I used on our Dad....'course he didn't 'zactly give us permission.... | Posted 5 days ago at our department we still have quite a few smokers...and i am one of them unfortunately. But mostly we try to stay somewhat away from the guys that dont and the ones that it bothers. As for calls its more just a timing thing. We also have no smoking near a structure fire even after the call due to investigations. We due respond to a few factories that allow no smoking and usually when we are there it is a minimum of about a 2 hour call so its usually go in the back of the truck. i have only had to yell at someone in our department one time because he decided that as soon as we got out of the truck he decided he wasnt gonna light up...thats neither the time nor place when you dont even know whats goin on or if fluids are leaking. The one question i have is they are putting out the new ban no smoking in public places. Ok well i am in a volunteer department is that considered a public place since we make all our own money and pay our own bills and have the right of who we want in our department?
yeah and i know it would jus be smarter to quit! its kinda hard tho ive gone 3 weeks and that was it |

| Posted 5 days ago at my station most of the guys smoke. The "rule" is that they can't smoke in uniform, which means marching and gear, but they do it anyway and nothing is said. They are pretty good about when they smoke. they will do it at the end of the call, or if it's a worker and they just came out of the building, we send them to fill bottles, relax, hydrate, and then they will smoke. If things need to be done, they will do that before they smoke. I guess i have some good guys when it comes to smoking. |

| Posted 2 days ago i personally disagree with this whole situation. Is it not like some kind of reverse discrimination. They are pushing all of this stuff entirely way to far, the smoking, the trans fat food and all this other stuff, they way i look at it if someone wants to do it let them. Im not disagreeing that smoking and second hand smoke may help in getting lung cancer, but i honestly believe that it is mostly in your genetics anyways. |

| Posted 1 day ago in our dept, when running with the ambulance...no smoking on scene or in the rig. so most do it after the call, or at the hospital in the smoking area. however, we are allowed to use chewing tobacco on scene, in the ambo, etc, as long as its not visible, and your not using a spitter. as far as the fire side goes...no rules set in ston ethat im aware of. i think we only have one or two smokers in the entire dept. everyone else chews...no big prob there... |
