A new EMT with balance issues

Posted 3 months ago Greetings EMS community! I'm a newby. An EMT-Basic that is trying to balance time with my family, the demands of my current job and studying for my EMT-Intermediate class. I'm trying to keep a balance of everything but its starting to take its toll. I'm dedicating myself to my class as best I can. Lets face it, you can not be in EMS without knowing your *&^% backwards and forwards. You all know as well as I do that its not easy. I'm looking for some old war stories and lessons learned from those of you who know where I'm comming from. Hey any good word is better than nothing at all! Take care and BE SAFE!

| Posted 3 months ago It depends on the instructor, really.
Mine for example, was all war stories and no lesson or instruction. What worked for me, and i dont neccessarily reccomend it for everyone, was to stop even listening to the instructor and go straight for the bool. I found that i did much better on the tests and quizzes and felt more confident with the things that I was doing in class and beyond. Sometimes to maintain your authority in the face of criticism, you have to make stuff up. |

| Posted 3 months ago Smokin it is truly a balancing act. Most important is to remember your family and not push them aside. What I have seen a few people do and I also did myself was set aside a special family night. No work, no study just family. Even something as simple as pizza and watching a movie together. Let them know study time is private time. If possible set this time at the same time your kids are studying. If they are still young and not in school try this ( I did with my granddaughter and it worked great) set up some pencils, crayons and paper. Give them preschool work and let them know this will help when they get to school. I gave my granddaughter spelling words to write out, pictures to draw and objects to count. She loved the fact that she was learning and she was helping grandma study. Hopes this helps some. |

| Posted 3 months ago Hello, I became an emt about a year ago. Was giving a friend a ride to class and ended up taking it myself. Wow, haven't been in school for almost 20 years.I just did alot of studying on my own instructor was young and didn't really teach us what we need to know but guess what you learn alot in the field. If someone more experience shows up and takes over that fine with me, I learn alot from them. Was stressful at home but family was very supported. Advise is slow down and don't stress,it all seems to work out. Remember someone elses emergency is not our emergency, sometimes that's hard to remember on calls. Take time to think about what you have to do.You'll do fine, because it's something that you want to do to help other people, good luck. |
