FYI- THIS THREAD IS NOW LOCKED.

I don't know about anyone else but the disrespect being shown lately on FireLink by kids on here is getting really old.

1. I don't and HAVE NEVER used the fact that I am female to get respect from anyone. To get respect you have to give respect. It's something you HAVE TO EARN !

2. I don't believe I have ever talked down to anyone because of my rank. My rank is FIREFIGHTER. I am not a chief, or asst chief, any other officer. So I have no reason to talk down to anyone. I have questioned on several occasions though, "firefighters" under the age of 18 being paid /on call. To my knowledge this is ILLEGAL.

I am not looking to get anyone in trouble. I am just pi**ed off because I have paid my dues and have trained my a** off to get where I am today and I'll be dam*ed if a child is going to speak to me like that. Yes I said I just consider the source, however it is rude, inconsiderate, inmature, ignorant and completely disrespectful. I don't come on this site to be cussed at by children. I come on this site to learn from fellow firefighters and to unwind. Take care and as always, stay safe.

as i said in the post that this spawned from...one bad jr FF can give us all a bad name. i personally dont think that we all fit into the group that lady is talking about. however, i do think that there needs to be some major policing done to curb those who dont have the respect and maturity needed to caryy on at least semi-intelligent conversations on here...

I totally agree. Nothing ticks me off more than a disrespectful person. A minor just makes it that much worse. I also agree that it is a small percentage of teens. Most, like yourself, have the proper respect and it is noticed and appreciated. Yes, respect is something earned, but then again, on this site, and in the fire service, there are seniority issues, rank, age, and other areas that should demand instant respect. If it is abused or not returned properly, then I can understand a failure in the chain.

However, we Moderators cannot possibly catch all activity, and rely on the membership to point things out as needed. Please do not hesitate to do so. You will remain as anonymous as possible.  Thanks.

i wholeheartedly agree with you chase. some just dont seem to understand what positions, rank, sex, etc deserve respect. and thats just a shame.

i also realize that the mods cannot catch everything. however i would like to offer my thanks and appreciation for what you guys do catch. you are a great bunch of guys (and maybe gals ?) and you really keep this a great place to post ;)

I absolutely agree with all of this. Granted, I had my moment(s) of big-headedness, and am very regretfull for it and apologized. I agree, respect should be and is earned, not always given.

Thank you dept24emt. You are very respectful and a youngster that has my respect. I didn't mean to put you in that group. I have never had an issue with you acting like a child because you act very adult. You are a respectful young man who will go very far in this profession. Thank you kindly for your responses and I would not ever have an issue "having your back". Take care and as always, stay safe.

Not directed at you either Velvet. Got your back sister .

Chase1, this discussion stems from the post "Pay", and me being called an ass and a dip shit. (Excuse the language.)

thanks lady. i really do appreciate it.

i would like to make a suggestion to the mods...how about a probationary period...lets say something like 30 days. the first time a new member goes off on a rant (such as in the "pay" post) we warn then. the second time, its the boot...how does that sound??

We can't really set up an automatic  probationary thing in the system. We do it manually. The standard process is basically our call, depending on the issue, they get a verbal warning, with either a one or three day ban, and then it usually jumps to a permanent ban. We are somewhat free to choose how it goes, and can make exceptions and different ban periods per the situation, but generically, it is the one or three day ban, and then gone. Also, you can see who the Mods are via the Introductions forum under "Meet the Moderators"

You got my vote here! I got your back as well. I will not tolerate juniors or explorers disrespecting elders or other people on here. I lke to think of myself and all firefighters as professionals and we should all be treated with such!

oo lets not get started on this subject again i was on aim having a good time goofing around with Velvet  Rose and she was the one who posted the pay discussion and she was like check this out so i opened the link and my attitude changed verry quickly i got soo aggarvated  that i think i started seeing flames i have no idea who he thought he was talking to and think he was going to get away with it becaue its never going to happen as long as i have all of your backs im and not with the fire service quite yet but hopefully soon. I know beter than to disrespect one another like you all say u give and get which unfortunately its going to be a long time before he will earn it if there was a fire i would risk my life to save him because thats what the job is but i sure wouldnt want him saving me you couldnt trust anyone like that to be honest some of these youg ones try to get into this career because they think it will give the a macho man image guess what give it up if thats the outlook for these young ones they better turn around and find something else to do try putting them in a fire and see how big bad and tough they'd act i bet they would be crying out for their moms. i know how much work all of you dedicated brother and sister firefighters put into this as your choice not because of the pay but to save a life believe me i have done extensive research and to all of you who have helped me out "Thanks" so i ahve all of your backs 100% after all this isnt just a job " Its gaining a second family for life that would do anything for one another in the time of need no matter if its day or night" so to all of you firefighters serving and no i dont care what rankin u have even if its voluenteer because you all do the same job and do it really well so for that i take my hat of to all of you .

Remember this. WHEN YOU MESS WITH ONE OF OUR OWN, YOU MESS WITH US ALL.

Now lets only hope i can become part of this family soon and get with a dept.  after all im part of the FireLink family....

Hey yooou guys, I got your back and you all have my respect. I automatically give respect to everyone I meet (with some exceptions ie: rapist, murderers and child molesters) You have it until you screw up and lose it and then you have to work to earn it back. Some don't get it back. Like lady said, I come here to learn and unwind with my extended family. I don't come here to get harassed or talk down to by some punk young or old. We may not always agree on everything and that's OK, but disagreeing respectfully is how it's done. Be Safe!

Disrespect of members, especially those that have paid their "dues" here is unacceptable.  Now I will be the first to say there are few people that have gotten sharp words from me, but I am doing this in response to some really foolish statements or topics.  But I still give them the respect and talk to them like a professional to a professional, albeit with an edge.

I don't have a lot of tolerence for stupidity (notice I didn't say ignorance, which is just a lack of education and is easily fixed.  Stupidity is uncurable) from individuals who claim to be a professional, especially in this line of work.

im in full agreement with you lady ff. i wouldnt be suprised if he's like some of the juniors around my area, they brag to all there friends about all this incredible stuff they did, and say how they know so much and in the end they dont know crap. that was completly disrespecful and completly un-needed.

i agree. people that do not even consider what firefighters do make fun of what they do. i am inbetween companies right now and myself only being 19 i hear some of the worst things that people say. they have no idea what it trully takes to be one or to become one. i had to listen to one of my own friends talk bad about fire companies once (i never told her that i was training or that my family ran the company she was dissing), i just let her talk then i ripped her a new one cuz i feel when you are part of a fire company it does not matter if you are related by blood or not everyone there is your family and you need to look out for eachother no matter what.

let me tell you now she trully understands what it takes and she now is one of my biggest supporters in anything that i have chosen to do cuz she sees how important it is to me. but out of all my friends that know she is the only one that has stopped dissing us which makes me sad.

Tina, I think it was pretty clear to all of us here {including newbies like myself}...that no one needed to jump in FRONT of you for that dispute, it was obvious that you had it under control....the rest of the firehouse was merely reminding you that in the unlikely event that you 'fell' fighting that "fire" the rest of us were ready to lend a hand....

I was going to say that I would get your front, but thought that would anger Grendel!!! lol  I got your back too sis, anytime, anyplace, anything.

I am very passionate when it comes to the whole respect in the fire service thing.  I was trained that way, and went through the first part of my volunteer career that way.  I started out as a Junior Firefighter for the Northport Fire Dept on Long Island, its not an Explorer post, we actually respond to fires and can go into fires after they are under control and we are escorted by firefighters to help with overhaul.  I learned a lot in those days, but I had to EARN the respect first before I was allowed to do anything else.  Whenever I or any Junior was in the firehouse and the chief walked into the room we had to stand at attention until told to stand down.  We could not enter the Back Room of the firehouse (the Lounge, with TV, soda fountain and tables w/chairs) until a firefighter noticed us and allowed us to enter, unless we were with a firefighter like our parents.  When there was a fire, we were to take ALL the cleaning duties afterwards, and if the chief saw a firefighter cleaning a tool or piece of equipment and we were standing around.....WHOA!!!!  Lets just say that at the next drill, that truck and EVERY piece of equipment on it was SHINY....VERY shiny!!!! LOL   We were also taught to keep our mouths shut, literally, when in the firehouse.  This way, we would not disrespect a firefighter or officer, and we would Listen  and Learn everything we could.  When you were a Last Year Junior you gained a little more respect, and had a little more freedom, and generally you were accepted into the the department right when you turned 18....only to start your Probationary Hazing!!! lol   So yah, I learned respect at an early age, and it realy upsets me to no end to see younger members disrespect their senior members.  Is there any part of the site software that will allow you to grant certain access priveledges to members to certain forums?  Like have a "Junior Firefighter" forum, or create a "Veteran Forum" for those of us old time firefighters to chat in and have it blocked out to only members with like 10 years in the service?  These are just ideas and in no way an insult to you RESPECTFUL younger members, but there are some of us who try to enter snd contribute to meaningful discussions only to have it ruined by arrogance and ignorance.

And just an FYI to you dept24EMT....I recently added you as a friend, and never paid attention to your profile, just your location and such, and I honestly thought I was talking to an older, experienced firefighter.  You my brother, are worthy of the respect I received as a last year Junior Firefighter, something that took me 4 years to obtain.  Keep it up!  I respect you and all the other younger members like you.

I agree entirely.  All it takes is one bad apple to ruin the whole bunch.  I went to the Fire House Academy a few weeks ago for orientation and first thing I saw when I walked into the class was some punk kids throwing paper at each other.  I mean, c'mon!  This is the Fire Department not some retail job.  A direct result of their actions was a Fire Chief in a bad mood.  I know this is off the subject in regards to disrespect on FIRELINK, but the same rules apply; "You're only as strong as your weakest link." My suggestion to those this pertains to... Do us all a favor (even more so yourself) and don't be that person.  Don't be the weakest link.  We're all here because we want to help people the best we can and as a fireman we understand that it's our teamwork, our unity that makes it happen.

Lady - I figured Grendel pretty well had the front covered so I opted for the other side!  LOL.

Anyway, it's refreshing to see the way we band together.  It never ceases to amaze me how a group of "strangers" can band together so quickly and efficiently to quell whatever challenge we are facing.

And to tag to what Moose said................"And just an FYI to you dept24EMT....I recently added you as a friend, and never paid attention to your profile, just your location and such, and I honestly thought I was talking to an older, experienced firefighter.  You my brother, are worthy of the respect I received as a last year Junior Firefighter, something that took me 4 years to obtain.  Keep it up!  I respect you and all the other younger members like you."

I agree whole-heartedly.  Thanks dept24EMT...you have my respect as well.

Regarding the attitude of certain younger members in here (of which I'm only aware of since reading this thread) I have to agree with chase1, let him know and bounce the individual.  As far as a general, prevailing attitude of younger members towards senior, older, higher ranking members, unfortunately there is not much you can do, other than perhaps boot them out of the department.  Which is not a bad thing.

On the other hand, I have personally seen where the younger member is disrespectul (to a degree), mostly though just see themself as everyone's equal where, at 18 or 19 think that they are the same as everyone else.  They tend to tick a lot of people off and ultimately end up having all the scut work dumped on them.  And I've seen where these people after a couple of years have actually changed.  Of course, having gotten older, a bit more wiser, they began to realize that whatever 'crap' they were being given, it was all their fault.  As their attitude towards others changed, so did everyone elses.

My point: In time they are kicked out, leave on their own, or end up being productive members of the department.  If I had a choice of having to deal with juniors with attitudes, or department blisters (they're the ones who show up after the work is done) I'll take the juniors because I know that that problem will eventually self-correct.  Unfortunately the blisters are in the department for other reasons and never seem to leave.

It takes one minute to get a bad reputation and a life time to live it down.
