My First Planned training.

Posted 3 months ago We have meetings 2xs a month on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, Every time Im asked what are we doing for training this week Yankee? I give a suggestion and its turned down! If we dont tear a part a car or truck we dont train. I feel we need fire traing also. So I told them last week I want to burn a car or 2 , but we have to cut it also , our 2nd asst. chief has a fit if we dont, My question is what is the best way to keep all happy? And what can I use for the igniter? |

| Posted 3 months ago Minimum requirements of attendance, use the list of subjects for certification as choices, but all must be covered at some point. A marine flare gun is safest to ignite things. It is cheap and doesn't burn long. Jeff Draper

| Posted about 1 month ago Get a copy of the book " Fire Company Training Evolutions" it has great lesson and practical plans laid all out for you. In N.C. there are certain criteria we have to meet for training throughout the year; 8 hours haz-mat recert. 8 hours driver operator, foam fire streams, rescue, etc... As the training officer it is my job ( luckily I have the help and support of a good Chief ) to see that we meet the bill. I don't gear training toward what someone wants to do, I gear it toward what needs to be taught. If the dept. has no training officer, the chief is setting himself up for a major problem if anything goes wrong, I hope it doesn't, but you never know. As for burning a car, or filing a house w/ smoke, if someone gets hurt somebody is going to have to show that all involved ( students and trainers ) have had prior training in the evolutions being performed. Be careful, Yankee, if the dept. doesn't give you the proper support, don't take the liability onto yourself. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Thanks Captian50, I'll keep that in mind . I just want to expand MY abilities for me . But I have to remind my self where I am at , cause Im from NEW YORK STATE and the South hates us so called YANKEE'S !!! thats how I got this name . We just had a meeting Thursday and its still going to happen with filling a house with smoke and a good possible of burning it too.I think I will just kick back and watch things go and see .More than likely I'LL be in the tanker anyways. Where can i find this book ? be safe all . |

| Posted about 1 month ago Where you at? I'll be sure not to travel in your dist. ( Not to be mean ) Does't your state have requirments? It sounds like everybody is just lazy but you. Firefighting,Rescue,Ems.Are just like anything eles.If you don't TRAIN. You don't keep your skills up. I just can't understand a Dept. that doesn't want to train. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I'm not the training officer but I put on 1 drill a month while the officers are at there meeting. I'm lucky in my dept. the officers listen to me. We have 3 training nights 1 meeting night, and a dinner on 5th mondays. People complain when we do the basic drills, but you know what, we don't care. We obviously all have the problem of people only wanting to do the "fun" drills, but we do have mandatory drills. Captain50 is absolutely rite about having to provide records of prior training if somebody gets hurt. |

| Posted about 1 month ago LOL I include myself in that remark about common sense. We sometimes lose sight when training and I know more about the subject than the instructor. I get the big head syndrome and right after I correct the instructor I'm wishing someone would just smack me on the head and say shut-up! Mind you, the instructor that was teaching didn't know the material. He was reading from a book and had no clue how to do the "hands-on" portion of the class. It had to do with drafting and we do it alot and train on it a LOT! Not saying he didn't know firefighting or any other subject he taught(he did) He came from a metro dept that just didn't deal with the subject. Common sense should have told him to not teach a skill he himself didn't know. I tried it myself and it was miserable and I felt stupid. Won't happen again. If I am not thoroughly informed I won't be teaching it. |

| Posted about 1 month ago As training officer, I have a huge problem with getting the guys to show up for training when we're not burning or cutting on something. I hate sitting in a classroom as much as the next guy, but so much of our training is in the classroom. That said, hay works well as an igniter for a car fire, especially if it still has an interior. If the car has already been burnt, a little diesel fuel on top of the hay can help a lot. In the past, I would take an old plastic foam bucket and fill it about halfway with diesel and set it under the hay, leaving the cap off. This kept the fire going a little longer and added a little realism to the evolution. Not saying I'd do the same today... |
