How many of you have actually started a program of DEFINITE physical fitness.

How many of you are working every day at aerobic fitness training or above.

And how many just need to get a little bump to get going?

Let's kick this one around a bit and see if we can't all get into some sort of training program.

That means all of us, people.  We all love each other and care for each other's safety and well-being.

So get back to me in private or in person.  I will steer you in the right direction.

Be safe, but be fit.

I walk and/or ride my bike almost every day. I use my glider several times a week just to keep my cardio activity up. I would like to start a weight training program one of these days.

Recently had a physical, {with my wife in the room.} She was not happy to find out that my triglicerides were in the  800s, Could not read the chol because it was so high. Uric acid was 9.2 {being treated for gout right now} And have had a heart murmur and an AV block for a year and a half that I have done nothing about. Needless to say my physical fitness regine starts today, And I am turning 46 tomorrow.

Our dept. just had each one of us take a full blown physical.  The good new is that all of us checked out ok.  HOWEVER, most of us have plenty of work to do to be in better physical condition.  Our chief is getting ready to put in a new physical fitness SOG.

I myself try to jog and ride the stationary bike at work.  Also, lift weights somewhat regularly.  I'll be the first to admit though, that I should be doing much more.

Well....I  started exercising again about a year ago.  I wasn't serious about it until one of my nurses came back with breast cancer.  We decided to do  the Women's 4 miler race this year to benefit breast cancer research.  Well,  I am not a runner. Never have been.  But I am now running a whopping 3/4 mile without stopping.  I couldn't do 100 yards when I started.  It's a slow pace,  if you will,  but I realize I am not 25!   However,  my Doc told me 4 months ago that I had to do this or she would put me on cholesterolmeds.  I am only borderline but 2 years ago I was great,  so things are increasing.  3 kids and Thyroid issue's will do that to you!  I have lost 15 lbs.  so far.   Believe me,  if I can get off my carb loving butt and do this,  so can anybody else!   Just get moving!  :)   Oh,  and I only run every other day at 0540 and do weights on the other days.  Got to switch!

The other thing to consider here is diet.  It's great to workout and work on conditioning but your body needs the proper fuel.  Remeber to stay hydrated too!

You are  correct,  dhernandez,  we need the proper fuel.  If my kids will eat it,  that's what's on the plate!   They like fruits and vegetables but,  like me,  they like that "other stuff" a little too well!   I'm working on it though!

Well, this is a great start.  We all need PT or physical training.  As Mr. Hernandez pointed out we need proper nutrition esp. hydration.

We are all very prone to dehydration and hypo and hyperthemia.   We have to make a concerted effort to write down our goals and write a

plan to go by.  Let's get to work on our bodies, minds, and spirits.  Report back how you are doing.  It will be good.  It has to be.  We have a

lot on our plates and lot of people depending on us.  Let's not let them down.  You can do it.

What do you think about a Group on here concentrating on Physical Fitness and Nutrition??  I will sponsor it if you want.  We can go from

there.  I bet Stew Smith will monitor and give us tips too.  Stew Smith, for those who don't know, is the SEAL who develops programs of

fitness training for anyone.  Depending on there Doctor, their condition, etc etc.

Let's kick it in the Arse and gain or lose the pounds and get the old heart running smooth (aerobics).  Build a little muscle where it's

needed.  I am with you all on this.  And damn proud you admit your faults and plans.  I will help be your cheer leader and sounding board.

Let's Git-R-Done.  I will want a contract of some sort with your sworn statement saying you will do it.  It can be verbal. Set goals, start within

your limits and increase as we go.  Each does his own program.  The plan starts now.!!!

We have a physical agility test every quarter.  You have to make three of them in a year, otherwise you are on probation.  Fifteen minutes to complete ten stations related to fireground activity (carrying a high-rise load up stairs and back down, dummy drag in the "Tunnel of Love"), and no running allowed.  If you're not prepared and rush anyway, you ask for a hurtin'.  We test our new recruits now, too, rather than send them away for testing.

Our department requires physical examinations for us at least once every three years.  You have to have more check-ups as you advance in age, too.  We also have a workout room at one of our main stations.  The younger set uses it a lot, which is good.  But most of the older set, the people who need it most, rarely work out.  I do weights and aerobics at least three times a week together, at least 45 minutes of time spent each session.  And I do want to keep going, if I can.  Have to be fit to pick up the slack from the people who don't keep fit.

OK Skeeter, here is my agreement and I am enlisting everyone's help on this. This January I weighed 106 lbs and I started working out so I would be able to lift 140lb from the floor to my waist to pass the AMR physical agility. I haven't changed my eating habits at all and still I gained weight and not just muscle. I now weigh 128lbs and want to slim the fat and be all muscle. I know that is not alot but when you never been over 110lbs except 9 months pregnant and the was only 120lbs, it feels like alot to me. One area I lack in is drinking enough water. I don't like water and pass the time with Dr Pepper instead.

So here it is, I am headed to Calif tomorrow to assist with the wildfires and I am going to use these 2 weeks to stop drinking Dr. Pepper and drink alot more water. I will continue to ride my bike and walk daily when I return home. I will try my best to slow down on the junk food and eat more fruits and vegetables and not just what's in the 88 cent Wal-Mart TV dinners, Raisinets and Chocolate Covered Peanuts. At 46 and a junk food eater, my Tris and Chol is at the right levels and I want to keep them that way.

Good luck to everyone and let's get healthy!

Well,  Iv'e gotten up to running one mile without stopping now. It takes me 14 minutes-I go slow. It hurts but it's a good hurt,  if there is such a thing!    I have to be careful with the weights,  though.   I started doing chest pull downs ( I'm sorry if I don't get the names right!) about 3 months ago and my left shoulder wasn't happy with me.  I had to start at 5 lbs. and I'm not kidding!   I am now up to 40 lbs and it doesn't feel like a knife is twisting my shoulder off.  I actually have a muscle!   Scary.   I don't want to look like Arnold Schwartzennegar,  or however you spell it,  but I want to be able to be fit and healthy.   I have lost more weight with the running than anything but I can't run unless I do the other stuff either!  I 'm not ready to divulge my weight yet!  Let's just say I'm less then 200 and more than 100.  :)

Keep up with it Jen................................I will be painfully honest with you, when I started running, i couldnt even run a half a mile without almost dying, at least thats what it felt like,  i kept at it, it sucked, I didn't like it, but now I do, I put on my MP3 player and haul a$$, I am now up to 2.5 miles in 20 min.   I had to work up to it, but I got there, and If I can do it, anyone can!   I run every other day, for 20 min, no matter if I run farther or 2.5 miles, I set the Chrono on my watch and I don't stop until it reaches 20 min.  thats a good cardio workout 20 min or more, anything less than 20 min. doesn't really give you cardio,   hey if your legs are too sore, try running every third day. after your body get's used to it, then run every other day, as far as the weights go, upper body upper body upper body!   and dont forget your back because without a strong upper and lower back, all the upper body strength in the world won't mean anything.

I'm still running!   I am pushing past that mental blockade of stopping at 1 mile.  I can get a mile and qurter now.  I'm hoping to be at 1 1/2 mile within the next week or so.  Depends on how I feel,  or how bad I hurt!  :)   I'm still doing it though!

Marine Corps IST (initial strength test) consist of the following: At least 45 push-ups in 2 minutes. 45 Sit-ups in 2 minutes. 2 bar pull ups. and run 1 1/2 under 13 minutes.

"Hell, these are Marines. Men like them held Guadalcanal and took Iwo Jima. Bagdad ain't shit." "Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem." United States Marine Corps

I agree that Stew Smith's book is an excellent reference. I would highly recommend it to anyone. We based our physical maintenance program on it. Good luck.
