I am starting fire school this monday, I am nervous and a little scared, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning I am so excited,  I am looking for advice from all you guys with years in the fire service, I want to be the best I can be, and I want to be a good student, and I want to show my instructors the passion I feel inside for the fire service, all I have ever wanted to be was a Firefighter, so please tell me how I can do this, someone told me to just raise my hand every time that they say they need a volunteer to help with something, can you guys give me your advice?    also any advice or wisdom at all in regards to any aspect of fire school would be greatly appreciated, I am excited but I am very nervous, I just want to do the right things all the time and not make any mistakes, and I have heard pushups are generously given for mistakes, lol

Congrats,

Be honest and be restrained. Don't volunteer for thing you don't know or are unsure of what you are doing. also be honest with yourself if you know it .......know it don't BS yourself or anybody else. Instructors smell 2 things BS and fear. Just be honest

I realize I have said this before and I am quoting a crusty old fire Captain and it has served me well over the years "You have two eyes, two ears and one mouth - use 'em in proportion.  Look, Listen, and only ask Questions"   Fire Instructors want to answer your every question and they are impressed with performance and perseverance.  The Best of Luck to you!  Godspeed!!

You will be just fine. Pay attention to what is being taught. Ask questions. And remember a stupid question is the one not asked.

Get yourself a IFSTA manual and read it. During tests/exams,emagine yourself in a courtroom, being on the stand. How would you answer the question? That works for me.   Best of luck.

I also forgot the one thing I said to every class I taught as an Instructor (Air Force) " there is no such thing as a stupid question....Just a lot of stupid answeres."
