okay this NR EMT-B class is going to be harder than I thought.  I have a 4.0 gpa and now I find out that the score for this class offers a grade of an "A" or a "B" or a "F"  no happy medium?  No C's or D's allowed.  I understand why a C or D is not acceptable however, to get a A or B in this class is going to take some serious studying.  HELP.

Stay 1 chapter a head. This way the class becomes a review.

It doesn't really go by an A,B,C,D grade, but rather 80 is the pass/fail line. It is indeed difficult. Especially since the NR test is practically retarded compared to actual patient care answers. It's almost like having to learn it two ways. It's not that bad though. Just be sure and follow through with clinicals, ride-outs, and then test as soon as possible. Any delays will be a loss of memory and knowledge.

Gotta look at it this way............if the EMT was treating you......would you want them to be right only 75% of the time, or 90% of the time?  It's a tough class - but I'll echo what everyone else has said...study, study, and study.  Go over the chapters before class, so it just becomes a review and use your workbook.  Chase was right on about testing early.........the longer you wait, the more you brain dump.

One suggestion from someone who is currently in a paramedic class.....don't read extra into test questions.  Read the questions carefully, but don't assume anything extra in those questions.  That is where NR will mess you up.  If you study, you will do fine, but you have to study.

I have faith in you. You can do this and pass with flying colors. You do need to pay attention in class and read all they tell you to read. Like the rest said, you have to study. I highlighted extreamly important parts as we went over them in class then went over them again as I was studying. You will find a system that works for you. Have fun but stay focused. If you stress over it  you tend to read too much into it.

oh wow, I don;t know.  You all say I can do it.  I'm not so sure.  I mean I just don't know how to remember all this stuff.  I had no idea there was so many ways to clear the damn airway.  So much to remember.  I've been first on scene so many times and felt like I was almost  as good as a EMT when it comes to prehospital care............boy, was I wrong.  If I don't pass this class it's going to delay my new career with FEMA next year.  I have to have this certification completed.  I think I better turn to God and ask him to have a hand in this as well.

Trust me I didn't think I could do it when I went through the class either. At the time I took my class I was a senior in high school, plus working two jobs at 25 plus hours a week and firefighting but somehow I managed to be able to pass my class. I am going to reiterate exactly what everyone else has been saying. Study as much as humanly possible. Eat, sleep, drink and breathe EMS. You won't regret it in the long run. When it comes to class tests, don't blow them off. They really do prepare you well for the State test at the end of the class. Do as much hands on work as you can. I found that's what helped me the most. Request it from your instructors that they show you examples, and that once a week or so you have a night where it's all practical hands on. Those were the best nights, especially because that was one night where if you were stuck and needed an explanation on something, you could get one on one attention from the instructor. When taking your tests, trust your first instinct. One major thing to remember about the test is that it's all basically common sense. What's the first thing you do? Scene safety. Second? BSI. Third? (Pt assessment, including the ABC's). On the test, actually think through those options, and th first one that you see is going to be the right answer. Don't jump steps on the test. That is one other thing that I wish I would have known when starting the course. And remember that if you ever need anything at all you can just pop on here and ask one of us, or send one of us a private message and we will help you as much as we can. You really can do it. Just trust yourself, and you will catch on really quick.

*Another thing that really helped me was going to the fire dept. and doing practicals there.* Once you get further in class throw a message my way and I'll give you some pretty good scenarios.

EMS classes can be very scary when you first start attending but there are some really easy steps that I give to my new medic students that should help you in class and when you get into the field.

1. Know your anatomy and physiology! I found through my years in the medical service that knowing how the body works and what happens in each system during different types of injuries and illnesses have been really been my biggest strength when conducting patient assessments. I would recommend learning deeper into your anat/phys. as well as your general EMT studies. This is not easy, I understand that, but it will be a huge strength for you in the end especially if you go on to being a paramedic. The more you know the better you will be...........

2. Like everyone said, study-study-study! The thing is make sure you study in a productive manner that gives you the highest retainment of knowledge with the quickest recall as possible. I know this sounds kind of dumb to be saying "know how to study", but believe it or not most people do not know how to properly study in the manner that best suits them. Some people can just read a subject and have full retainment while others have to write down the key points and still then some people have to either do the practical applications or just constantly repeat what they read or wrote down in order to retain the information. Just do whats best for you.........

Good luck and remember to save the hard core partying for when you graduate, put your full time and effort into the course and you will succeed!

Ho wis everyone doing on the tests so far? I have been studying my butt of and so far it is apying off. I have been able to hold a 98% average. Quite a bit of info though. I think I have studied more in the first 16 chapters then I had to for the whole Firefighter 1 class.

Well firefightingprincess, it's not gonna be too easy you are dealing with human lives in this profession. However if you think that's hard I need to meet the same grade requirements in my paramedic schooling. That involves advanced a&p, chemistry, advanced pharmocology, advanced airways, and trauma assessments, not to mention reading out of 6 2-inch textbooks and using 5 workbooks. I know that the EMT-B is alot, I just got my card in April of '07, however it's a good beginning to get you into good habits for your medic. You'll do fine, just keep your head up, and study hard. Good luck !!!

Thank You everyone.  I am studying as much as I can.   I'm getting ready to do my ride along and work in the emergency room for a day.  It's strange that I have been to so many medical calls on the engine and felt confident on each and every call that I can help whatever the medical needs were.   Now I'm in class and worried that  I can't do it on paper.  K well, I got to go.  Study, Study, Study.............

It will all come back to you! Just try to relax when you have the written test in front of you and try to picture the actual event when working through practicals or those annoying long scenario test questions.....................

What can you tell me to help me with my skills testing coming up?  8 stations and some we have up to 25 minutes at and others we have to control the scene within 10 -15 minutes.   I can't imagine this. .............. again, I have been at many scenes where these types of medical practices were in progress.  Jeez, I was helping.  Now that I am on the medic side of this............... I get nervous.  Maybe I could wear my turn-outs and helmet during the test?   That would be funny huh?
