Posted 2 months ago I"ve never been to a Fire Academy but from what I've heard it's like boot camp for Firefighters. I'm asking those that know , what to expect ? Do they call you names, chew you out , say they want you to quit , etc ? Whats the deal ? Help someone is some way everyday. Standing at the ready, Tail wagging; ready to run !! |

| Posted 2 months ago Well, in NYS where I am its tougher training at the academy because its taken more serious there than in the outreach classes taught at the fire stations around the county. I prefer to go to the academy because you get a group of students who are more serious about their training and take it to the max every day they are there, instead of goofing off and just "Getting a certificate". But the instructors dont holler at you or shout in your face like in military moot camp. They offer encouragement and never let you quit, but it doesnt get drastic. I dont know about NC though, it might be different there. Do you know anyone in your dept that has been there and can tell you about it? Are you going there soon, is so good luck to you brother! And stay safe. Moose Brian "Moose" Jones

| Posted 2 months ago I'm not going anytime soon but I've got a friend in a Fla . academy and this firefighter says they make you do push ups and running pt .drills , in full turnout running up and down stairs , getting in your face and chewing you out much like a police academy. I dare not mention this persons name because I don't want them to recieve retaliation. The descriptions I've recieved from several makes it sound like boot camp. Help someone is some way everyday. | Posted 2 months ago I went to a Fire college in Florida about 3 years ago for Firefighter 1, and some of our instructors were from the military and it deffinietly showed. They never yelled bad things, or even told any of us to quit or anything, but, they were very strict about P.T. and anything that we were learning on the fire grounds. I am deffinietly glad that they were this way, because this is serious stuff, and means life or death a lot. Also it helped very much so getting me into shape. Now I am on as a cadet and they are training me to get me ready for Firefighter 2 class. They teach this class in house. The P.T. really works you, and the PAT is a lot tougher than when I went to the Fire college. This is also great because in the 3 years that has passed since getting fire 1 I am gotten married and had a kid and am a bit out of shape. Point is, both the Fire college and this Fire Department are great schools. They were and are very tough, but, again that is how it should be. If this is truly your passion as it is mine, then the extra work outs and training is the best thing in the world. One common thing between the two, that you will hate at first but hopefully will learn to appreciate. Everyone does everything together, like pushups and situps, and things like that. So everyone goes at the pace of the slowest one in the group, which can be extremely tiring, but very effective with your own workouts. Also, whenever someone steps over a ladder or screws up on the fire grounds, everyone does pushups, all together, like a team. Have fun, hope you get a tough school, because it will set you up for a great carreer. "We don't come to bow. We come to conquer." |

| Posted 2 months ago The first couple of days are semi-tough. EMTnikon has it right. Any instructor worth his salt will stress and re-stress safety. They wont let you kill your self. You, however, have to know and accept your own limits!!! We are not mind readers. If you need a break, take a break! I might get frustrated with you but I wont be mad. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Safetey first is definately what they are all about here in CT also. Fire1 was definately a lot of pysichal work, and they did yell to motivate and push us. I don't think they ever went to far though. Once we got to know the instructors thats when they started to bust stones and get on us if we screwed up. I gave all of the instructors a good review at the end, some of them were toupher than others but they were all good. Now in Fire 2 they start of respecting you a little more, cause you've allready earned a little in fire 1. Fire 2 was a lot less pysichal and was more geared towards the leadership aspect of the fire service, and there was no yelling bulying or anything like that. |
