Posted about 1 month ago I am wanting to pursue a fire fighting career and i was wondering what classes i should take. I want to take classes that will give me an edge come testing time. I am currently enrolled in EMT-basic and i plan on taking Fire tactics 1 and 2, Fire Adminstration, Fire Fighting 1, Emergency Vehicle Operations and Paramedic 1 in the spring. Im also planning on taking Scuba lessons over winter break. What other classes should i be looking into and also what scuba certifications do i need to aquire to be able to do rescue and recovery dives for a fire dept. Also what else would you recommend i do to give me that edge that is needed during testing? Volunteering around the community? what type of volunteering? Also i am taking all these classes in Oklahoma but considering my pursuit of fire fighting in the state of illinois, but i dont know if these certifications will be accepted by stations in the state of illinois. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Michael

| Posted about 1 month ago Michael you shoud take all the fire classes that the college has try to get your AA than a BA. this will help. Join a fire department and run all the call you can. This will get you hands on training. As with the medical go on as many calls you can to get use to seeing the different types of Pts. and calls. Medical and trauma. Hope this helps Steven |

| Posted about 1 month ago Yes working in the ER is good. But EMS out in the field is not the same. Out in the field you have the crew that is on the Ambulance. Most RN dont understand EMS and how it works. Working on the Ambulance or with a non transport will help you learn how to take care of Pts in an uncontroled enviorment. |
