Does your son/daughter want to follow in you foot steps and become a FF or EMT? Do you approve? What are your thoughts?

My 19 year old is in probie school for the city now. He has been a Jr. since he was 9. I was raised in the fire service.

I dont have any children and my family was never really in the fire service but i do hope that someday my son or daughter wants to follow in my footsteps. Its a very rewarding career and very noble.

I'm cross-trained (police/fire/EMS) with at least basics across the board, having served in all three capacities, sometimes in unison, a couple of times in tandem (more than one dept, police and/or fire/EMS). My oldest son want's to be a police officer. I support his decission 100%, but I constantly tell him that thing are WAY different now than prior to my LOD injury (police) retirement. He LOVES to here stories from "back in the day" and ocassionally I'll get a bit over zealous and tell him some of the "over the top" antics we pulled, and I have to remember to tell him "Just because I did it or it was OK then doesn't mean it is now or will be when you get there"... but yes, I do support his decission, be it fire, police, etc.

I definitely think that children raised in a household with firefighting parents understand the responsibilities and realities of the line of duty more so than others. On the other hand, as a parent in the service, knowing and understanding the risks makes it hard to support your children to put themselves at risk.

FF is big in my family past, but might end with me in my immediate family. I have a son (20) and daughter (18), and neither are interested. They really support me, but just don't seem to want to. I thought it would bother me, but it doesn't too much. If they changed their mind, I would support them. I must admit, they are both doing well so far in what they have chosen, so I can't complain.

I dont have any kids yet at this point in my life, but when the day comes that I do have children, I'd be afraid of them following my footsteps, but in the same frame of mind, would support them 100%.

I'm the first firefighter/emt in my family and it's going to be my career so I would love if my kids followed in my footsteps, but if not they can do what they want.

My Son, Jeremy, has been a Firefighter for 3 years. He is a Firefighter II and spent 270 days deployed as a Rescuer in the aftermath of Katrina. He is currently working on his degree in Fire Science. My 15 yr old daughter Shelby has mentioned a career in the Fire Service too. She may be the Best Firefighter in the family!

The firehouse was pretty much a second home when I was little. I ended up following in my Dad's footsteps. I'm now an EMT and Captain of our FD serving under my Dad, who is Chief. My 7yo nephew goes with us when we do FD parades and goes to the station with us and told his kindergarten class last year that he wants to be a firefighter like his papaw and aunt when he grows up.

My father started as an EMT in the early 70's. When i was about 7 he started taking me to all of the drills untill I was 16. So for me to finaly join the fire dept. even if it did take me a while to join. I have done maritime firefighting for the last 19 years. Iam now learning how civilian firefighting is conducted. there isn't alot of difference in the 2 , but there are trucks that im learning all about.

My granddaughter is six and she wants to follow in my footsteps.  She has her own ff boots and loves putting on my gear. I have a pic of her wearing my mask. Of course she'll probably change her mind when she gets older but who knows. When I was studying my medic she would look at my book and ask how to care for someone when their sick or hurt and actually likes to practice on the mannequins. She has watch Jaws and Fred Kruger since she was born and has been on quite callouts with me on the dive team ( we have one person watch the kids if there) so far blood and gore from movies and pics she'e been ok with. You never know when the pager goes off there either and we respond POV. She tell you I am going to be a FF like my grandma and help people. TOO COOL!
