If, God forbid, you ever hear that call, that a Firefighter is down inside a dwelling while attmepting to fight a fire, what exactly do you do to get him/her out. Is a team assembled, are there certain tactics?

Well we have a RIT team which is set up on all working fires there job is to stand by outside and if a firefighter goes down they will be in charge of the rescue of the firefighter. and if that happens and the RIT team goes in another RIT team is set up . just in case the RIT team has a back up.

Be safe

Our policy is suppose to work as follows:
Our RIT is generally a Mutual Aid call, because our total staffing is 5-7 a day. Mutual aid arrives and their OIC reports to our IC and remains with him so he has a clear idea of crews location in the structure. 2 of the 4 RIT members will 360 building to determine access points and/or obstructions, shut down utilities if needed and throw ladders. The equipment that we want our RIT to have is: spare bottle and SCBA, universal SCBA connection (mutual aid), radios (all our neighbors are on different freq.), K-12, backboard, lights, handtools, small bag of small tools, search rope. All RIT equipment is marked so as to not be used by other personnel.
In the event of a "mayday" we should maintain radio silence except for RIT, IC and mayday firefighter. Once position and needs established IC should do PAR check, but all crews should remain in place and continue activities. This did not work well the last time we had a Mayday call, fortunately no one seriously injuried. Like anything else, policy is fine but we need to train to it and often.

I understand you are running 5-7 man shifts, but on entry not requiring rescue are you using the 2 in and 2 out?

We do maintain 2i2o with the IC (w/SCBA on) functioning as the second person. This usually does not last long, as our MA companies are only 5-8 minutes out. The standard as I understand it allows one person to be active with other duties so long as they can drop them in the event of a rescue. It's not the best way to do things but...

for any working fire Rescue one is sent as the RIT, with five people assigned to the rescue. basically we do the same as Grantham.

We do RIT similar to madchr except the entire RIT crew will do a 360. In the time that I've been in the fire department I've only been on one call where they've activated the RIT, it was honestly the worst moment of my life when they called for firefighters down because one of the interior crews wasn't answering the PAR check. Luckily enough when they called in the Mayday the missing interior crew got out and called in PAR, apparently they had a malfunctioning radio... I was so relieved because as we heading over to the structure as the RIT, you know nothing good could come of that as the RIT.

we dont really have a RIT team, but we have people in our dept. who are trained for such. a vol. dept from the city comes out whenever we have a fire w/possible entrapment, theyr dispatched. they also are dispatched if a distress call goes out...
