We do some, but the quarterlies, bi-annuals, and annuals are done by our dealer/maintenance service. Our two mainline trucks are still about 3 years old, so they get done. The older trucks we do, or have it done, depending on what it is.

My volunteer Chief is a Diesel Mechanic by trade and generally does all of the trucks. He saves the town tons of money. Do you think the town returns the favor.... I think not!

Our chief owns his own auto repair shop and does all the maintenance on our trucks as well. However, he quit doing the "charity" work on them about a year ago and started sending the city a bill after each time. They have learned to appreciate him, and us, a little more - but not much.

Yea, I hear you! I wish that our chief would grow some balls and start charging the town as well.

As a driver you should know what is wrong while driveing and should be paying attention to the vehical as you  go .always do you pretrip (anytime ) and a post trip , especialy when you get back from a call. You never know what could be damaged !! just walk a round the truck looking , thats all . I do all the time ,even my pov. If you check your porta pumps ,check the oil too, just do the whole unit and then its done . it only takes about 20 mins. a week.
