Exploding vehicle struts

Strut embedded in garage door

This is an article from Firefighterclosecalls. It covers the risks of hydraulic cylinder struts used in rear hatches, windows, and even bumpers.

On July 14, 2006 T@ 01:15 our FD responded to a report of a car on fire in the garage. Upon arrival of our
Deputy Chief, a 21’ x 18’ alley garage was fully involved with a car inside. The fire was spreading to garages on each side and across the alley. While doing a 360 the first arriving command unit heard a loud pop and right after a striking sound. Companies began the extinguishing process. While checking on the exposures, command found two hood support struts that were embedded into the metal garage across the alley, approximately 16 feet away from the garage and car of origin. After a examination of the car a 1999 Buick Century 4-door sedan it was determined that the hood support struts from the car were shot through the car’s front grill, the garage metal overhead door and one of them embedded into the garage door across the alley. The other strut had also been shot across
the alley and hit the garage door but did not penetrate the door. We have digital photos of the strut embedded into the metal garage door. Let me know how to send the digital photos of the strut embedded into the garage door. This is why we where full protective clothing and WE DON'T APPROACH CAR FIRES FROM THE FRONT AND REAR! Just a reminder. A firefighter fighting the garage fire, standing in front of the garage at the right time could of been injured it hit by the exploding struts. See pictures below of the results.

Good article, and it should REMIND everyone to use caution when approaching a car fire. Remember people, the car is a total loss 99% of the time any way, unless there is a life risk, we should take our time and don a FULL set of turnouts, including pack, and approach these things in a safe manner from the side. Good article.
